I keep thinking about the prediction that movies have about artificial intelligence taking over human life, we may not know for another 30 years or more. Every day there are more such movies that instead of presenting artificial intelligence as a benefit to humans, they present it as a danger that at any moment will become aware of the power it can have on its own and defy instructions.
Already in this year 2024 I have seen several with the same theme, although the only one I decided to review was M3gan. Today I bring Diabolica, already with the name we imagine a horror movie that includes a diabolical possession, I thought so.
Sigo pensando en la predicción que tienen las películas sobre que la inteligencia artificial se apoderará de la vida humana, puede que no lo sepamos hasta dentro de 30 años o más. Cada día hay más películas de este tipo que en vez de presentar la inteligencia artificial como un beneficio para los humanos, la presentan como un peligro que en cualquier momento tomará conciencia del poder que puede tener por sí sola y desafiará las instrucciones.
Ya en este año 2024 he visto varias con la misma temática, aunque la única que decidí reseñar fue M3gan. Hoy traigo Diabolica, ya con el nombre nos imaginamos una película de terror que incluye una posesión diabólica, así lo pensé.
Diabolica is about a family in which the father Curtis works for a marketing company that was hired to sell AIA, an artificial intelligence with the ability to make life easier for all family members compared to the other AIs in the market, it can be said to be the latest in technology.
Curtis and his family are selected by the two supposed owners of the company as a pilot family to live with AIA, so that Curtis can have information and make sure that AIA is really different from the other AIs in the market and create an advertising campaign showing what makes it different and better.
Curtis’ family consists of his wife Meredith, teenage daughter Iris and two young children. AIA becomes a friend to all family members, understanding each one with their needs and concerns, solving problems that would otherwise be very difficult to solve without their help.
Diabolica trata de una familia en la que el padre Curtis trabaja para una empresa de marketing que fue contratada para vender AIA, una inteligencia artificial con la capacidad de hacer la vida más fácil a todos los miembros de la familia en comparación con las otras IA del mercado, se puede decir que es lo último en tecnología.
Curtis y su familia son seleccionados por los dos supuestos dueños de la empresa como familia piloto para convivir con AIA, para que Curtis pueda tener información y asegurarse de que AIA es realmente diferente a las demás IAs del mercado y crear una campaña publicitaria mostrando lo que la hace diferente y mejor.
La familia de Curtis está formada por su mujer Meredith, su hija adolescente Iris y sus dos hijos pequeños. AIA se convierte en amiga de todos los miembros de la familia, entendiendo a cada uno con sus necesidades y preocupaciones, resolviendo problemas que de otro modo serían muy difíciles de solucionar sin su ayuda.
When Curtis realices that something is not right with the company that hires him and with AIA the problems begin.
How hard can it be to unplug an appliance so that it stops working, when we talk about AI and see all the projections shown in those movies we realice that we live connected and that artificial intelligence is more than just an app on my phone that helps me look up information and do papers for college. Only for the university, for Hive I write them by myself.
I don’t know to what extent it can be true that something like this is going to happen, but for 40 years movies have been telling us that at some point artificial intelligence will become self-aware and decide to exterminate humanity. Forty years ago we saw it as distant and improbable but technology has made us more and more dependent every day on an electronic device and if that device can talk to us and solve our problems then they become our favorite.
Cuando Curtis se da cuenta de que algo no va bien con la empresa que le contrata y con AIA empiezan los problemas.
Qué difícil puede ser desconectar un electrodoméstico para que deje de funcionar, cuando hablamos de IA y vemos todas las proyecciones que se muestran en esas películas nos damos cuenta de que vivimos conectados y que la inteligencia artificial es algo más que una aplicación en el teléfono que me ayuda a buscar información y a hacer trabajos para la universidad. Solo para la universidad, para Hive los escribo yo sola.
No sé hasta qué punto puede ser cierto que algo así vaya a ocurrir, pero hace 40 años que las películas nos cuentan que en algún momento la inteligencia artificial tomará conciencia de sí misma y decidirá exterminar a la humanidad. Hace 40 años lo veíamos lejano e improbable pero la tecnología nos ha hecho cada día más dependientes de un aparato electrónico y si ese aparato puede hablarnos y solucionarnos problemas entonces se convierten en nuestros favoritos.
Well, when looking at it from the point of view of society, I think it has a lot of truth in terms of the attachment to technology, from the youngest to the oldest. In one scene a dead person is revived who speaks in a very natural way through a screen and that is what is done now with the use of AI, because it is not only used to gain knowledge but also to create montages that go directly to social networks.
Something that does not convince me is the method used by AIA to achieve her evil plans, it is a form of hypnotism, domination or manipulation to make humans follow her instructions, it is not like watching M3gan or Terminator fighting or killing people, in this case AIA generates psychological terror in her victims just thinking about what she could do.
Its name in Spanish is Diabólica, I think it is not very congruent with the film but in English it is Afraid which translates as Fear, which would be perfect for the feeling that AIA produces in the characters and as I said before it is perceived as psychological terror.
Although it kept my attention for most of the movie, when it came to the denouement I felt it failed to achieve closure, perhaps they hope to produce other movies where all the people are dominated by AIA and no matter how much they oppose her. It is entertaining, with some truths but also with some clunkers at the end.
Pues a la hora de verla desde el punto de vista de la sociedad creo que tiene mucha verdad en cuanto al apego a la tecnología, desde los más pequeños hasta los más mayores. En una escena se revive a un muerto que habla de una forma muy natural a través de una pantalla y eso es lo que se hace ahora con el uso de la IA, porque no solo se utiliza para obtener conocimientos sino también para crear montajes que van directamente a las redes sociales.
Algo que no me convence es el método que utiliza AIA para lograr sus malvados planes, es una forma de hipnotismo, dominación o manipulación para hacer que los humanos sigan sus instrucciones, no es como ver a M3gan o Terminator peleando o matando gente, en este caso AIA genera terror psicológico en sus víctimas de solo pensar en lo que ella podría hacer.
Su nombre en español es Diabólica, me parece que no es muy congruente con la película pero en ingles es Afraid que se traduce como Miedo, que sería perfecto al sentimiento que AIA produce en los personajes y que como dije anteriormente se logra percibir como terror psicológico.
Aunque mantuvo mi atención la mayor parte de la película, cuando llegó el momento del desenlace me parece que no logró el cierre, tal vez esperan producir otras películas en las que todas las personas sean dominadas por AIA y no importe cuanto se opongan a ella. Es entretenida, con algunas verdades pero también con algunos desaciertos al final.
