One of the sources of inspiration for Babygirl are clearly the erotic thrillers of the late eighties and a good part of the nineties. The film's director has confirmed this in several interviews, in which she claims to do so under her female gaze, although I see no difference in that regard. The film has two scenes that some may consider very erotic and that I found very light.
Halina Rejin is a Dutch filmmaker who has also made a career as an actress. Valkyrie and The Black Book are two of the best known films in the West that she has worked on, although she has also worked extensively in her native country. Sex has also been a recurring theme in her short filmography. Her directorial debut was Instinct, where the protagonist falls in love with a sexual abuser, and her next project in pre-production is about a newlywed couple who meet a yoga instructor who alters the couple.
The filmmaker's previous work was Bodies Bodies Bodies Bodies, a horror film that I thought was a lot of fun and recommend seeing. With Babygirl she has garnered a lot of positive press, awards at festivals and nominations for major awards. I found it an entertaining film, but it didn't cause me great euphoria and I can't classify it as a groundbreaking film. The only thing that keeps the story interesting is its protagonist Nicole Kidman, the rest are decaffeinated characters.
I didn't want to bring in the feminist theme, but the director herself has claimed in several interviews to be a feminist and that the film is to awaken the beast in women against what they call patriarchy. I dare to say that she says it just to ride on the prevailing trend for some time, because what she is trying to tell us with the film, is easy to dismantle with the plot and the behavior of her main character.

La película tiene dos escenas que algunos pueden considerar muy eróticas y que a mí me parecieron muy ligeras.

El anterior trabajo de la cineasta fue Bodies Bodies Bodies, una película de terror que me pareció muy divertida y que recomiendo ver. Con Babygirl ha conseguido mucha prensa positiva, premios en festivales y nominaciones en premios importantes. Me ha parecido una película entretenida, pero no me ha causado gran euforia y no puedo clasificarla como una película rompedora. Lo único que mantiene interesante la historia es su protagonista Nicole Kidman, el resto son personajes descafeinados.
No quería meter el tema feminista, pero la propia directora ha decarado en varias entrevistas ser feminista y que la película es para despertar la bestiaen las mujeres contra lo que llaman patriarcado. Me atrevo a decir que lo dice sólo para montarse en la tendencia imperante durante algún tiempo, porque lo que intenta decirnos con la película, es fácil de desmontar con el argumento y el comportamiento de su personaje protagonista.
Nicole Kidman plays Romy. A successful woman who has risen to the top in a robotics company. She is a leader, a woman in a position of power. She has been married to Jacob, a theater director, for almost twenty years. They have two teenage daughters. It's a typical proggy family. She has been repressing her sexual desires, fantasies, fetishes all this time. It seems strange to me, being a progre family. The husband is the archetype of the perfect idiot. He is drawn as a man who doesn't know how to fuck. One who only does two positions, ejaculates and then goes to sleep. Supposedly she has been putting up with that. I agree that after 19 years of marriage they don't have the same passion, it's normal. If any of you have been married for more than ten years, tell me s you make love with the same intensity and continuity of the first year. Everyone's answer will be negative, anyone who says otherwise is lying through their teeth. Here I don't buy that she has been repeating her fantasies for all these years being a real empowered woman.
Her fantasy is to be humiliated. I see it as valid, everyone has their own ways of getting aroused and enjoying sexuality. Is it her husband's fault that she is not satisfied? For me he is not to blame. She was the one who kept quiet and didn't speak clearly with him, who is a theater director and surely proge, so he is not a conservative and has a lot of creativity to do things in bed. Although I know that there are men with cold cocks, but in this movie I don't believe it, besides they put Antonio Banderas as her husband. My God!
The character named Samuel, the young man who makes Romy lose control is the most blurred. We don't know much about him, neither his past nor his true motivations. He also seems very bold, does he have any hidden agenda? We'll never know, other than having charm and a strange fetish for dogs and milk, I didn't find a workable and realistic justification for this character. I would have preferred the relationship to develop more spontaneously. Unless the guy has superpowers and detects at a glance which woman fantasizes about being humiliated.
Romy is in a very powerful position. She's the boss and he's just an intern. She crosses the boundaries, but the director of the film says she represents a break with patriarchy. If the story were the other way around? As it happens a lot, rich old men in companies who date young female interns, they want to demonize it, but the other way around they want to sell it as liberating. I believe that everyone does with his or her life and body what he or she wants. You have to enjoy your sexuality. What I don't like is that they try to demonize a gender because of it. Just as older men like younger women, there are older women who melt for a younger man. It's as simple as that. On the other hand, the character of Esme, who flies the feminist flag in the story, takes a most wicked and low-down shortcut, completely destroying the discourse.

Nicole Kidman interpreta a Romy. Una mujer de éxito que ha llegado a lo más alto en una empresa de robótica. Es una líder, una mujer en una posición de poder. Lleva casi veinte años casada con Jacob, director de teatro. Tienen dos hijas adolescentes. Es la típica familia progre. Ella ha estado reprimiendo sus deseos sexuales, fantasías, fetiches todo este tiempo. Me parece extraño, siendo una familia progre. El marido es el arquetipo del perfecto idiota. Se le dibuja como un hombre que no sabe follar. Uno que sólo hace dos posturas, eyacula y luego se va a dormir. Supuestamente ella ha estado aguantando eso. Estoy de acuerdo que después de 19 años de matrimonio no tengan la misma pasión, es normal. Si alguno de ustedes lleva casado más de diez años, dime s hacen el amor con la misma intensidad y continuidad del primer año. La respuesta de todos será negativa, quien diga lo contrario miente descaradamente. Aquí no me creo que ella haya estado repitiendo sus fantasías durante todos estos años siendo una mujer empoderada de verdad.
Su fantasía es ser humillada. Lo veo válido, cada uno tiene sus formas de excitarse y disfrutar de la sexualidad. ¿Es culpa del marido que ella no esté satisfecha? Para mí él no tiene la culpa. Ella fue la que calló y no habló claro con él, quien es director de teatro y seguramente proge, así que no es un conservador y tiene mucha creatividad para hacer cosas en la cama. Aunque sé que hay hombres polla fría, pero en esta película no me lo creo, además le ponen de marido a Antonio Banderas. ¡Dios Mio!
El personaje llamado Samuel, el joven que hace perder el control a Romy es el más desdibujado. No sabemos mucho de él, ni su pasado ni sus verdaderas motivaciones. También parece muy atrevido, ¿tiene algún plan oculto? Nunca lo sabremos, aparte de tener encanto y un extraño fetiche por los perros y la leche, no encontré una justificación factible y realista para este personaje. Hubiera preferido que la relación se desarrollara de forma más espontánea. A no ser que el tipo tenga superpoderes y detecte de un vistazo qué mujer fantasea con ser humillada.
Romy está en una posición muy poderosa. Ella es la jefa y él no es más que un becario. Ella cruza los límites, pero el director de la película dice que representa una ruptura con el patriarcado. ¿Si la historia fuera al revés? Como pasa mucho, viejos ricos en empresas que salen con jóvenes becarias, lo quieren demonizar, pero al revés lo quieren vender como liberador. Yo creo que cada uno hace con su vida y con su cuerpo lo que quiere. Hay que disfrutar de la sexualidad. Lo que no me gusta es que se intente demonizar a un género por ello. Igual que a los hombres mayores les gustan las mujeres jóvenes, también hay mujeres mayores que se derriten por un hombre joven. Es tan sencillo como eso. Por otro lado, el personaje de Esme, que enarbola la bandera feminista en la historia, toma un atajo de lo más malvado y rastrero, destrozando por completo el discurso.

Mickey Madison looks lovely. A star is born with this film. He builds his character in a fantastic way, giving him toughness and candor at the same time. It is impossible not to be fascinated by her character and her performance. Between her and Demi Moore should be the Oscar winner. When you see her, you will realize the interpretative difference between her and the one who is pushing for a nomination in the best actress category (I'm sure you know who I mean). By the way, I saw a news where they criticized the actress because she asked not to need an intimacy director in the sex scenes. Something I applaud. That figure of intimacy directors seems idiotic to me.
The rest of the cast is fabulous. Mark Eydelshteyn plays Vanya and does it so well it makes you slap that asshole. Yuriy Borisov, who is also nominated for an Oscar, will mesmerize everyone with his character of Igor. Karren Karagulian and Vache Tovmasyan are the other two who star in hilarious scenes.

Mickey Madison está encantadora. Ha nacido una estrella con esta película. Construye su personaje de forma fantástica, dándole dureza y candidez al mismo tiempo. Es imposible no sentirse fascinado por su personaje y su interpretación. Entre ella y Demi Moore debería estar la ganadora del Oscar. Cuando la veas , te percataras de la diferencia interpretativa entre ella y quien esta uruspando una nominación en esa categoria de mejor actriz (seguro que sabes a quien me refiero). Por cierto, vi una noticia donde criticaban a la actriz porque pidió no necesitar un director de intimidad en las escenas de sexo. Algo que aplaudo. Esa figura de los directores de intimidad me parece una idiotez.
El resto del reparto es fabuloso. Mark Eydelshteyn interpreta a Vanya y lo hace tan bien que te hace abofetear a ese imbécil. Yuriy Borisov, que también está nominado al Oscar, fascinará a todos con su personaje de Igor. Karren Karagulian y Vache Tovmasyan son los otros dos que protagonizan escenas divertidísimas.
