The TikTok Dilemma

After I read about the TikTok situation, I cannot help but think that the US government is being a bit unfair.

ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok has two options – either dispose of its business in America or be banned. The only reason behind this ultimatum is fear over national security and data privacy.

I get it, I really do. With millions of Americans using this app every day, there are valid concerns as to what could happen if China gains access to all that information. Elections are at stake here people! Public opinion can shift based on what they see scrolling through their “For You feed.”

There’s a deadline too; January 19th 2025 is when ByteDance must have sold off their US operations.

But isn’t it crazy? They would rather close up shop completely instead of letting someone else buy it from them. This shows just how valuable TikTok’s algorithm really is to these guys though; without them being able to predict what videos you’ll like next, wouldn’t work so well.

The issues of the American government are understandable, but I sympathize with TikTok as well. It has been a big part in people’s lives including my own. This is where I can express my creative side, get connected with others and simply have fun.

A ban would mean not only affecting myself but millions of Americans who use TikTok every single day.

Shou Zi Chew, CEO of TikTok has promised in a TikTok video to legally oppose the ban on it by stating that it is against the constitution. His commitment is something I respect although I doubt if he can win this fight, because United States authorities hardly change their minds once they make up such decisions; hence anything can happen to TikTok.

I also find it strange that the discussion revolves around TikTok’s algorithm. This only proves how powerful algorithms are when it comes to shaping our online experience.

Although these systems may personalize content for us making them lively, there still exists concerns over privacy and even manipulation.

Ultimately, I want an outcome that is good for all parties involved.

TikTok has given so many people happiness and it would be sad if this comes to an end too soon. However, I also acknowledge the importance of safeguarding national security as well as personal information.

I will forever treasure my experiences and friendships formed through TikTok – it’s not just about videos but also sharing our lives with others around us who care enough to watch them; thus making it like any other social media platform out there except that you can find people from different walks of life here which makes everything more interesting.
