Anime Review: Villainess Level 99

The full title is "Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss but I'm Not the Demon Lord" based on the light novel written by Satori Tanabata and illustrated by Tea. It's an isekai romantic comedy show spanning for 12 episodes with only the first few ones being its best and every succeeding episode from midway to end became flat.

    Plot:

Yumiella Dolkness got reincarnated to another world which happens to be an Otome Game (romantic simulation games targeted to female audience) she recently played. In that game, her original player character Alicia, a commoner and the story's main protagonist with rare light magic, was enrolled into a prestigious Royal Academy for Aristocrats.

Alicia is destined to meet Prince Edwin and friends that will help her defeat the Demon Lord. Since it's an Otome game, Alicia's interactions would go exactly as how Yumiella remembered the dating simulation game went. But because Yumiella already knows the game's ending, her character in that world (as Yumiella) is also destined to be the hidden boss after the Demon Lord is defeated.

Yumiella spends her childhood days leveling up before the fated battle and everything she could to avoid getting involved with the game's original story plot resulting in her death.

    WARNING:

If you're already interested in watching the show, avoid the spoilers below.

The first few episodes were probably the best until every episode just pans out in the same routine due to the protagonist being overpowered. It went on a plateau for a few more episodes until the unexciting ending.

There's no real threat to Yumiella other than what she creates inside her internal monologue. On the contrary, the more Yumiella tries to avoid being on the spotlight or any endeavor, the opposite happens for comedic reasons.

Because she leveled up to max 99 when other students are expected to be level 10 when they entered the academy at best, her abilities made her on par with the Demon Lord.

The show's sense of humor undermines plot points that could've been serious. Those exaggerated drawn facial expressions you see on anime spoils parts of the story where it could have been better but then we're reoriented that this show's plot isn't meant to be taken seriously and it's a romantic comedy in another world. At least, there is some consistency when it comes to what the show isn't trying to be.

Since the focus has always been about Yumiella's unintended antics, there's not really a lot of things going for other supporting cast other than making Yumiella standout more. This show didn't really do justice when it comes to the supporting cast. As the real protagonist of the show, Yumiella's growth lies in her ability to gradually be more conscious about how others see her and how she communicates.

I think it's just an average show you can watch once, find some entertainment, and wouldn't miss or wish for another season. But it did make Yumiella an impressionable character to remember.
