¿Que si se relacionan entre sí? Yo creo que no hay la menor duda. La lectura nos ayuda a abrir miles de horizontes, a explorar y conocer el pensamiento de otros y trasladarnos a siglos inmemoriales. Como lector, puedo decir que he aprendido mucho de los libros que he leído. He aprendido que cada historia cuenta, que todos tenemos algo que decir y que escuchar es la mejor forma de aprender y contar historias.
De pequeño escuchaba a mis mayores. Me fascinaba escuchar las historias de mi abuelo y también de mis abuelas. Las contaban con una gracia que a sol de hoy las sigo recordando con mucho cariño. De ellos aprendí que debo respetar a todas las personas y a cualquier ser vivo, desde una planta hasta los animales.
Uno de los libros que me ha ayudado en mi formación ha sido el Quijote. Y debo decir que la primera vez que lo leí —tenía entre 15 y 16 años— no entendí nada. Estuve a punto de abandonarlo varias veces, pero no me dí por vencido.
La segunda vez fue maravilloso. Entendí que todos podemos ser alguna vez un Quijote, que tenemos el afán de hacer el bien aunque nos vaya mal, y tener a un amigo incondicional como Sancho, que sabiendo cómo iban a terminar las cosas, seguía a su señor y amigo.
Desde entonces, he podido imaginar mundos, historias, personas con ciertos aires quijotescos. Y en ocasiones me he aventurado a desfacer entuertos a pesar de terminar todo destartalado.
Algo que me emociona es encontrar a personas con los mismos intereses que los míos, a otros lectores con los que poder intercambiar impresiones y lecturas. Sin embargo, veo con preocupación la falta de interés de los jóvenes por leer.
Hace poco les pregunté a mis alumnos que si tenían un libro favorito. Su reacción me dejó atónito: se echaron a reír. Eso me hizo reflexionar en que esta generación hace alarde de su ignorancia.
Cuando los mando a leer, ven la lectura como un estigma, un castigo. Por eso, antes o después de cada clase les leo un poema, les hago preguntas y los ánimo a pensar.
No es tarea fácil. Sé que muchos tienen talento, pero no lo explotan porque no ven sus posibilidades, y por eso les señalo vez tras vez que la lectura les ayudará a expandir su imaginación, a ser más creativos, y a ser más concientes de su entorno y de su propio futuro.
Desde mi punto de vista, la lectura ayuda a canalizar los sentimientos, a descubrir en parte quienes somos o qué podemos hacer. Podemos ver la vida de otra forma, verla a través de los ojos de la literatura, un poco entre realidad y ficción, y buscar siempre lo bueno de lo que nos rodea.

Are they related to each other? I think there is no doubt about it. Reading helps us to open up thousands of horizons, to explore and learn about the thoughts of others and take us back to centuries immemorial. As a reader, I can say that I have learned a lot from the books I have read. I have learned that every story counts, that we all have something to say and that listening is the best way to learn and tell stories.
As a child I listened to my elders. I was fascinated to listen to the stories of my grandfather and also my grandmothers. They told them with such grace that I still remember them fondly to this day. From them I learned that I must respect all people and all living beings, from plants to animals.
One of the books that has helped me in my education has been Don Quixote. And I must say that the first time I read it -I was between 15 and 16 years old- I didn't understand anything. I was on the verge of abandoning it several times, but I did not give up.
The second time was wonderful. I understood that we can all be a Quixote at some point, that we have the desire to do good even if it goes badly, and to have an unconditional friend like Sancho, who, knowing how things were going to end, followed his lord and friend.
Since then, I have been able to imagine worlds, stories, people with a certain quixotic air. And sometimes I have ventured to unravel misfortunes in spite of ending up in a mess.
Something that excites me is to find people with the same interests as mine, other readers with whom I can exchange impressions and readings. However, I see with concern the lack of interest of young people in reading.
I recently asked my students if they had a favorite book. Their reaction stunned me: they burst out laughing. That made me reflect that this generation flaunts its ignorance.
When I send them to read, they see reading as a stigma, a punishment. So before or after each class I read them a poem, ask them questions and encourage them to think.
It's not an easy task. I know that many have talent, but they don't exploit it because they don't see its possibilities, and that's why I point out to them time after time that reading will help them to expand their imagination, to be more creative, and to be more aware of their surroundings and their own future.
From my point of view, reading helps to channel feelings, to discover in part who we are or what we can do. We can see life differently, see it through the eyes of literature, a bit between reality and fiction, and always look for the good in what surrounds us.
