Mixing coffee with raw egg

in voilk •  last month

    Greetings!

I got to learn some weird food combinations from my dad when I was growing up in the family house. There were some that once he prepared them, none of us in the house would be interested in eating. Among all of them, there was one that each time I think of it, my brain still feels weird. It was the mixing of a raw egg with coffee.

The first day he did that, he was feeling feverish. He wasn't able to eat real solid food; all he could take were watery foods like tea, soft drinks, and fruits.

It was evening time when he sent my immediate younger brother to go and get him two sachets of Nescafé (that's a brand of coffee). My brother went and returned with it, made him warm water, and gave it to him to mix by himself according to how thick and sugary he wanted it.

Little did we know that he had some eggs beside the table. He brought the eggs out, cracked one, and poured it inside the glass containing the coffee that was steaming.

Upon seeing the 'magic' he was preparing, we all ran to watch him further because everything looked weird; raw egg in coffee, haaa! That was the extreme of it.

According to him, he needed blood, and he thought raw egg with coffee would give him that. Well, I don't know if it works that way. Over here in my country, people are their own doctors, especially when it comes to behaving like in ancient times. Lol. There are a lot of ways, I mean a lot of weird combinations that people take and feel it gives blood, such as mixing tomato paste in a soft drink and comfortably drinking it. So this mixing of raw egg with coffee was one of the ways my dad adopted to use in regaining lost blood in the midst of sickness.

Oh boy, when he was drinking it, I didn't know where to put my face because it was so odd. I can't even drink a raw egg just like many people do, and I can't imagine having it in my coffee. It'll definitely spoil the taste and the fun of drinking coffee.

"Would you like to drink?" he asked my siblings and me, standing before him and looking at him with weird eyes.

I didn't say a word; instead, I shook my head in rejection. My immediate brother said no too, and surprisingly, the girl among us said yes and walked towards him. My dad positioned the glass on her mouth and made her sip a little. We were watching and expected my sister to make a frowning face like that of someone who just tasted a bitter leaf, but she didn't. Instead, she licked her mouth with her tongue coming out, which made my brother and me start to think otherwise.

    Maybe it could be tasteful.

Maybe the raw egg acted like sugar to it.

All these thoughts, I didn't allow to get into my head because hey, raw egg is not something I'm fond of.

    Thanks for reading.
