All Hail Queen Caitlin

I was a little annoyed last night when I saw that the Iowa/Michigan women's basketball game didn't start until 8:00 PM. That's about half an hour past the time I am normally in bed on a school night. It's not that I am an old man, but I'm definitely not as young as I used to be. Plus, our dog Jovi is at the point in her life where routine is very important and if I am not up letting her out for the final time at 7:30, then she gets a bit cranky.

No problem, I figured I would just pull up YouTube TV on my phone in the bedroom and watch the beginning of the game. Being only 8 points away from the record, I knew it wouldn't take long for Caitlin Clark to blow past the high scoring record.

Except I couldn't find the game anywhere on YouTube TV. I did a quick Google search and discovered it was only available on the Peacock streaming app. Good thing my wife and I just signed up for a trial of that so we could watch the final season of "Suits".

I quickly pulled up the game only to find it had already started. Luckily, I didn't miss anything. Caitlin scored a quick layup at the beginning of the game to shave her requirements down to 6 points. A possession or two later she hit a three pointer.

    Now she needed three points.

Then, with a massive lob just two steps short of half court, she broke the all time scoring record for women's college basketball. It was a pretty shot, no doubt about it. I don't know if she was really feeling it or if she just wanted the whole thing to be over, but any other player probably would have been scolded by the coach for taking that shot.

Not to rest on her laurels, Clark went on to score 41 more points for a total of 49 in a 106 to 89 route of Michigan. Simply amazing.

In fact, in the first quarter alone Caitlin scored more points than the entire Michigan team 23 to their 22.

You might be thinking "okay, so she is a ball hog". That's definitely not the case. Clark had a double double on the night with an impressive 13 assists.

It's safe to say the sky is the limit for the rest of the season!

My niece starts softball action down in Smyrna, TN today. It doesn't look like the games are going to live streamed, but the scores will be updated in real time, so I plan on keeping an eye on that!

Meanwhile, there was also some men's basketball on this week.

Tuesday in fact had 12 top 25 games on the schedule. Illinois State had a big 80 to 67 win over #23 Indiana State who I think had just broken into the top 25. That will likely send them back out of it unless they get a big upset win over a ranked opponent later this week. Syracuse also had an upset over #7 North Carolina 86 to 79.

Pittsburgh took down #21 Virgina 74 to 63, and that closed out the upsets for the day. I don't quite remember which day it was, but Michigan State had a pretty impressive win over Penn State. It wasn't an upset victory really, but it was a nice showing from a team that has been struggling a lot this season. I hope they can continue the momentum going forward.

Wednesday gave us three games in the top 25 with #13 Auburn taking down #11 South Carolina.

Finally, last night we had another three games in the top 25, none of them were upsets though.

Tonight there are no ranked games on, but with football now out of the way, that lays the foundation for what should be a huge weekend of basketball.

Nineteen games alone on Saturday and that leaves two games on Sunday.

It's safe to say I know what I will be doing this weekend!
