Pacific Rim is one of those films that I had been ignoring for years without understanding why, especially if I take into consideration that, at least according to its fans, it is one of the few translations that exist to the mecha/kaijous subgenre originating in Japan.

More importantly (at least in my case), a gigantic number of parallels have been drawn between this 2013 film and the iconic anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, which Guillermo del Toro repeatedly cited as a source of inspiration.
The thing is that while I recognize the presence of all of these elements in the final product (Especially when it comes to the lore of this universe and the way in which various aesthetic details are addressed), I admit with a bit of bitterness that I feel that Pacific Rim falls short on many other fronts, the most painful of which being the roster of human characters we're supposed to empathize with.
Don't get me wrong, this does not make this film a poor quality blockbuster, on the contrary, it embraces its fleeting nature and immerses us in a unique experience without any type of posthumous attachment... But, again, this happens to the detriment of its ability to mark us in the long term.
The point is that Pacific Rim exists in a strange limbo, where it recognizes its own virtues (the beautifully directed action and the complex designs of the creatures they fight), but it feels like an inexhaustible source of potential that is never taken advantage of.
Despite this, it remains one of the most powerful representations of this subgenre of anime, and I hope, eventually, it will inspire the existence of a slightly more solid tribute.

Pacific Rim es una de esas películas que llevaba años ignorando sin entender por qué, especialmente si tomo en consideración que, al menos acorde a sus fanáticos, es una de las pocas traslaciones que existen al subgénero de los mechas/kaijous originado en Japón.

Más importante aún (Al menos en mi caso), se han establecido una cantidad gigantesca de paralelismos entre este filme de 2013 y el icónico anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, a quien Guillermo del Toro citó en repetidas ocasiones como una fuente de inspiración.
La cuestión es que si bien reconozco la presencia de todos estos elementos en el producto final (Especialmente cuando se trata del lore de este universo y la forma en la que se abordan varios detalles estéticos), admito con un poco de amargura que siento que Pacific Rim se queda corto en muchos otros frentes, siendo el mas doloroso de estos la plantilla de personajes humanos con los que se supone debemos empatizar.
No me malinterpreten, esto no hace de esta película un blockbuster de mala calidad, todo lo contrario, abraza su naturaleza fugaz y nos sumerge en una experiencia única sin ningún tipo de apego póstumo... Pero, de nuevo, esto ocurre en detrimento de su capacidad para marcarnos a largo plazo.
La cuestión es que Pacific Rim existe en un limbo extraño, en dónde reconoce sus propias virtudes (La acción hermosamente dirigida y los complejos diseños de las criaturas que combaten), pero se siente como una fuente inagotable de potencial que no se aprovecha en ningún momento.
Pese a esto, se mantiene como una de las representaciones más potentes de este subgénero del animé, y espero, eventualmente, logre inspirar la existencia de un homenaje un poco más sólido.
