Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well Prompt #71

    Source

Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction prompt!

In this post, we'll announce the winners from last week's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

    Important notes:

    • Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
    • We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
    • Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
    • Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
    • We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
    • Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

    Highlighting @lightpen, with the story:

    The memorable sweet gesture

I retired back to my seat disappointedly. My eyes kept scanning the four walls of the hall. I saw pictures of the president, the state governor and the bank CEO. The challenges faced by the country flashed through my mind. One of the consequences is the unstable internet services due to lack of the necessary infrastructure. I shook my head intermittently while checking my wristwatch to know what time I had left before my practical class.

    Curator's comment :

Lightpen writes the most delightful, uplifting CNF about a bank teller who helped him withdraw money he desperately needed from the bank when servers were down. The teller trusted him because he appeared so very desperate and gave him her own money as a loan. Nicely told and very well structured. Lightpen has come along very well.

    Highlighting @zyzymena, with the story:

    Dusting off Nostalgia

I sifted through the clutter in the storeroom, picking up items one by one. The disarray suggested it had become a repository for items my parents deemed obsolete. No wonder my novels ended up here. I was coated in dust, triggering frequent sneezing. I decided to stop since my search was fruitless, only to spot an object tucked behind the back of the door.

    Curator's comment :

Her dialogue is wonderful and her use of action tags, instead of dialogue tags, makes for a polished piece.

    This Week's Prompt 71:

    "Music"

    Ideas :

    • After years of sticking to resolute denial, a guilty friend’s confession was music to your ears.
    • Perhaps you were forced to face the music after you were caught raiding the fridge and your secret obsession was exposed.
    • Music is not just entertaining and fun for you; it is food for your soul!
    • Maybe a difference in appreciation of music genres led to a fallout between you and a family member.

Tell us about it! And remember to integrate storytelling elements like characters, scene setting, dialogue and action to bring your story to life!

Have fun and good luck! We look forward to reading your stories.
