The hype got me to watch this movie, that's the problem when we blindly follow the opinions of others. I believed what many were saying, that this is the Indian John Wick, but I think it would be unfair to compare both movies. However,I won’t say the movie is bad; it’s a different plot with a distinct quality and acting style.

El Hype me ganó para ver esta película, ese es el problema cuando hacemos caso ciegamente a la opinion de los demas, crei lo que muchos decían, este es el John Wick de la India, pero creo que seria injusto comparar ambas películas, sin embargo, no digo que la película sea mala, es una trama diferente, con una calidad diferente y un estilo de actuación diferente.
The starting point that drives the protagonist's actions is revenge, in that it's similar to the John Wick movie, but this is a cliché of cinema. Movies where a guy wipes out everyone driven by the anger caused by the villain who killed his loved ones is something we've seen many times, so what does Monkey Man have new to offer?
El punto de partida que mueve las acciones del protagonista es la venganza, en eso se parece a la película de John Wick, pero esto es un cliche del cine, las peliculas donde un tipo arraza con todos movido por la ira que le causa el malvado que mato a sus seres queridos, es algo que hemos visto muchas veces, entonces ¿qué tiene de nuevo Monkey Man para ofrecer?
What was new and innovative for me as a Westerner was the parallelism of the protagonist's story with Hindu mythology, something totally new and unknown. The story of the main character played by Dev Patel, Kid, wears a monkey mask in clandestine fights and at times has memories of his childhood with his mother learning about the monkey god Hanuman.
Lo nuevo e innovador para mi como occidental fue el paralelismo de la historia del protagonista con la mitología hindú, algo totalmente nuevo y desconocido. La historia del personaje principal que interpreta Dev Patel, Kid usa una mascara de mono en luchas clandestinas y por momentos tiene recuerdos de su niñez junto a su madre aprendiendo sobre el dios mono Hánuman.
His mother is killed by the police chief when they are evicted from the place where he lives, Kid witnesses everything and that memory haunts him, fueling his thirst for revenge. He also remembers what Hanuman suffered at the hands of other gods and how he confronted Ravana, the god of demons.
Su madre muere a mano de quien es el jefe de la policía cuando son desalojados del lugar donde el vive, Kid presencia todo y ese recuerdo le atormenta alimentando su sed de venganza. Recuerda también lo que Hánuman padeció de manos de otros dioses y como se enfrento a Ravana el dios de los demonios.
This parallelism seemed interesting to me, the movie tells us how Hanuman was stripped of his powers for the recklessness of eating the sun, but later takes his place of prominence with the other gods and confronts Ravana, just as our protagonist finds his way to help him trace his goal and face the bad guys who caused his mother's death.
Este paralelismo me pareció interesante, la película nos relata como Hánuman fue despojado de sus poderes por la imprudencia de comerse el sol, pero que posteriormente ocupa su lugar de prominencia con los demás dioses y se enfrenta a Ravana, al igual que nuestro protagonista encuentra su camino que le ayuda a trazar su objetivo y enfrentar a los malos que causaron la muerte de su madre.
Other aspects to consider as positive that this movie has to offer, are not known at first glance. Thanks to the end credits or some previous research, you find out that Dev Pavel directs, produces, co-writes and stars in the movie, that its budget was only 10 million and he filmed with Iphones and GoPros, with a very good result that earned him good reviews worldwide and 34 million dollars in revenue.
Otros aspectos a considerar como positivos que esta película tiene que ofrecer, no se conoce a primera vista. Gracias a los créditos finales o una investigación previa, te enteras que Dev Pavel dirige, produce, co-escribe y protagoniza la película, que su presupuesto fue solo de 10 millones y filmó con Iphones y GoPros, con un muy buen resultado que le valió buenas críticas a nivel mundial y 34 millones de dólares recaudados.
I think the strong point of the movie is the narrative, if you pay attention, it takes us through complex issues in India, its politics and the segregation of minorities, its quite complex mythology and the reality of the majority of its population living in extreme poverty, all that added to very good action and combat scenes.
Creo que el punto fuerte de la película es la narrativa, si prestas atención, nos pasea por problemas complejos de la India, su política y la segregación de las minorías, su mitología bastante compleja y la realidad de la mayoría de su población que vive en extrema pobreza, todo eso sumado a escenas de acción y combate muy buenas.
Although I really liked the narrative, I don't want to take away any credit from the action work that the movie offers. In the fight scenes I noticed that Patel didn't use doubles, in this it does have a strong resemblance to John Wick and the work that Keanu Reeve did, I researched and found out that Patel is a black belt in Taekwondo since he was 10 years old, winner of several tournaments, that explains the naturalness of the fight scenes.
Aunque me gusto mucho la narrativa, no quiero restar merito al trabajo de accion que la película ofrece. En las escenas de combate note que Patel no usó dobles, en esto si tiene un fuerte parecido a John Wick y el trabajo que hizo Keanu Reeve, investigue y supe que Patel es cinturón negro en Taekwondo desde los 10 años, ganador de varios torneos, eso explica la naturalidad de las escenas de combate.
There was also another similarity with the John Wick movie, some scenes were shot in one take, for example, the fight in the elevator is a continuous shot, really well done. I also found very original that fight that ends with a stab with the mouth, the truth is that the movie has a lot to offer, it can be appreciated and enjoyed.
También hubo otra similitud con la película de John Wick, algunas escenas se grabaron en una sola toma, por ejemplo, el combate en el elevador es una toma continua la verdad que muy bien lograda. Tambien me parecio muy original esa pelea que finaliza con una puñalada con la boca, la verdad que la película tiene mucho que ofrecer, eso se aprecia y disfruta.
