One last part in the "concept album" series / Ein letzter Teil in der Serie »Konzept-Alben«
In my opinion, it's time for the concept album to have its day in the sun. But before I close the final chapter, I would like to turn to three albums, one of which has made musical history, one of which is the logical consequence of an unwavering self-confidence, and the third of which seems to be the expression of emotionally pent-up feelings. However they were made, these concept albums are, in my opinion, at the very top of the list of must-have albums.
Es wird höchste Zeit, das Thema Konzeptalbum zu begraben. Doch, bevor das letzte Kapitel geschlossen wird, wende ich mich noch drei Alben zu, bei denen das eine musikalische Zeitgeschichte geschrieben hat, das andere eine logische Folge von unbeirrbarem Selbstbewusstsein ist oder das dritte der Ausdruck von emotional angestauten Gefühlen zu sein scheint. Egal, wie auch immer entstanden, diese Konzept-Alben gehören meiner Ansicht nach ganz oben in die Rangliste der »muss-man-unbedingt-haben« Alben.
However, I'd like to talk about a film that has achieved something celluloid films rarely do, before turning to the "stars" of today's #ttt (#threetunetuesday initiated by @ablaze). In other words, to be many times more successful than the original stageplay. We are talking about the legendary "Rocky Horror Picture Show". While the stage show (The Rocky Horror Show) was considered to be rather boring by the critics, the film has managed to achieve a cult status over the years.
Jim Sharman & Richard O'Brien (director and screenplay) lead the audience into a castle in which the landlord calls himself Dr Frank N Furter and where the most bizarre stories take place.
This is a rock opera of the finest kind. Which of course is largely due to the compositions and the actors who embody the "weird" characters. Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Richard O'Brien and (not to forget) Meat Loaf.
In the beginning, it didn't look as if the production was going to be a success.
But from the moment it was released in art-house cinemas and audiences not only sang along to every song, but also turned up to screenings in outfits similar to those of the protagonists, no cinema operator took it off the schedule. It exists in cinemas where the Rocky Horror Picture Show is still shown at least once a week today. This has been the case since 1975.
Doch, bevor ich mich beim heutigen #ttt (#threetunetuesday initiiert von @ablaze) den „Hauptdarstellern“ zuwende, thematisiere ich noch einen Film, der etwas geschafft hat, was nur selten einem Zelluloid-Streifen gelingt. Nämlich um ein Vielfaches erfolgreicher als das Bühnenstück zu sein, welches als Vorlage diente. Die Rede ist von der legendären »Rocky Horror Picture Show«. Während das Geschehen auf der Bühne (Rocky Horror Show) von der Kritik als recht langweilig eingestuft wurde, schaffte es der Film im Laufe der Jahre in den Status eines Kultfilms.
Jim Sharman & Richard O’Brien (Regie und Drehbuch) entführen den Zuschauer in ein Schloss, dessen Hausherr sich Dr. Frank N Furter nennt und wo die skurrilsten Dinge wahr werden. Eine Rock-Oper der feinsten Sorte. Was selbstverständlich größtenteils an den
Kompositionen und an den Akteuren liegt, welche die „schrägen“ Figuren verkörpern. Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Richard O’Brien und (nicht zu vergessen) Meat Loaf.Anfänglich sah es überhaupt nicht danach aus, als könnte die Produktion ein Erfolg werden. Erst von dem Augenblick an, als der Film es in die Programm-Kinos schaffte und das Publikum nicht nur jeden Song lauthals mitsang, sondern zur Vorführung im ähnlichen Outfit wie die Protagonisten erschien, nahm ihn kein Kino-Betreiber mehr aus seinem Programm. Es existieren Kinos, in denen die Rocky Horror Picture Show noch heute mindestens einmal in der Woche läuft – und dies seit 1975.

Self confidence is the mother of all success
And no one had more of it than the man who was born as Francis Albert Sinatra, but who was known to everyone as Frank Sinatra. The singer and entertainer from New Jersey began his career behind the microphones of bandleaders Harry James and Tommy Dorsey. He should be considered the forefather of the concept album.
Once Frank Sinatra became a successful solo artist and a household name in the USA, he gained the confidence to get what he wanted from his record company bosses.
He was the one who believed in the success of the long-playing record, which at the time played almost no part in the sales of records. The LP made it possible for Sinatra to fill a disc with songs that were tailored to a particular theme. The 1955 album "In the Wee Small Hours", entitled "Self-Pity Ballads (Tourch Songs)", was the best example of this. The theme of the lonely singer in a bar at night with a drink and a cigarette was said to have been established.
And he did a wonderful job with that one!

Und wer besaß mehr davon, als der Mann, der Francis Albert Sinatra hieß, von allen jedoch nur Frank genannt wurde. Jener Sänger und Entertainer aus New Jersey, der seine Karriere hinter dem Mikrofonen der Band-Leader Harry James und Tommy Dorsey begann, sollte genaugenommen als der Urvater des Konzept-Albums bezeichnet werden.
Kaum wurde Frank Sinatra als Solokünstler erfolgreich und überall in den USA bekannt, baute er eine große Menge an Selbstvertrauen auf und setzte entsprechend seine Wünsche bei den Platten-Bossen durch.
Er war es, der fest an den Erfolg der Langspielplatte glaubte, die damals fast keine Rolle bei den Verkäufen spielte. Die LP erlaubte es nämlich Sinatra, eine Scheibe mit extra auf ein Thema zugeschnittenen Songs zu füllen. Bestes Beispiel dafür, das 1955 produzierte Album ”in the wee small hours”, das den Zusatz ”Selbstmitleidsballaden (Tourch Songs)” mit sich trägt. Es soll das Sujet vom einsamen Crooner mit Drink und Zigarette nachts in der Bar begründeten.
Das hat er wunderbar hinbekommen!
From self-confidence to depression
Who can relate to the name of Michael Trent Reznor right now? I can tell you this much: The man has a collection of nails in his basement that are exactly 22.86 centimetres in length. What the hell is his purpose? Apparently, they inspire him to compose, record and produce really good music. Trent Reznor is actually "Nine Inch Nail" — the solo entertainer of a rock band from Cleveland, USA. He is a multi-instrumentalist. When performing live on stage, he takes the opportunity to include other musicians in his productions.
In March 1994, "NIN" released a concept album entitled "The Downward Spiral", which deals (through the example of one man) with a subject that plays a significant role in our lives, but is often hushed: Depression, which can lead to wanting to kill oneself. The fact that Reznor recorded the album in the house and music studio where actress Sharon Tate was once murdered was also a factor in the album and its subject matter being widely discussed in the music industry.
Vom Selbstbewusstsein zur Depression
Wer kann mit dem Namen Michael Trent Reznor etwas anfangen? So viel kann ich verraten: Der Mann hütet Nägel im Keller, die exakt 22,86 Zentimeter lang sind. Warum er die Dinger benötigt? Offensichtlich inspirieren sie ihn, richtig gute Musik zu komponieren, einzuspielen und zu produzieren. Trent Reznor ist in der Tat ”Nine Inch Nail” - der Alleinunterhalter einer Rock-Band aus Cleveland (USA). Als Multi-Instrumentalist greift er dann die Möglichkeit auf, andere Musiker in seine Produktionen einzubinden, wenn es live auf die Bühne geht.
Im März 1994 brachte “NIN” ein Konzept-Album mit dem Titel ”The Downward Spiral” auf den Markt, das sich (am Beispiel eines Mannes) mit einem Thema beschäftigt, welches in unserem Leben keine unbedeutende Rolle spielt, aber liebend gerne totgeschwiegen wird: Depressionen, die mit einem Suizid enden können. Nicht unerheblich dazu beigetragen, dass dieses Album mit seiner Thematik in der Musikbranche ausführlich behandelt wurde, lag auch darin begründet, Reznor das Album im Haus mit Musik-Studio aufnahm, in dem einst die Schauspielerin Sharon Tate umgebracht wurde.
With perfection, escape into fiction
Who is responsible for the design and the production of this dessert? The four boys from Liverpool, of course, who gave us the perfect concept album for our entertainment. "The Beatles" not only slip into unusual clothes, but also into the care of a hitherto completely unknown formation: "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"
At the end of the 1960s, George, Ringo, John and Paul sometimes got on each other's nerves. This was partly because they were constantly in the studio or on stage, as if welded together. Distance was necessary. It was Paul McCartney who came up with the idea of the fictitious band. Get out of the public eye and hide behind artificially created characters. But the album turned out quite differently than originally planned. The original plan was: Love & Peace and a lot of ideal world. This was scrapped after only a few recordings.
The result is probably the best concept album ever. With "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" the live performances came to an end. From then on, The Beatles existed only as a studio band.
Mit Perfektion in die Fiktion enteilen
Wem ist die Gestaltung und Verarbeitung des Desserts vorbehalten? Natürlich den vier Jungs aus Liverpool, die wohl das perfekte Konzeptalbum, bis heute produziert, uns zur Unterhaltung überlassen haben. ”The Beatles” schlüpfen kurzerhand nicht nur in ungewöhnliche Klamotten, sondern auch in die Obhut einer bis dahin gänzlich unbekannten Formation: ”Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”
George, Ringo, John und Paul gingen sich Ende der 60er-Jahre gelegentlich ziemlich heftig auf die Nerven, was auch damit zusammenhing, ständig im Studio oder auf einer Bühne wie verschweißt zu sein. Abstand voneinander war, dringt notwendig. Paul McCartney war es, der die Idee mit der fiktiven Band zur Diskussion stellte. Raus aus der Öffentlichkeit und sich hinter künstlich erschaffenen Figuren verstecken. Doch entwickelte sich das Album ganz anders, als ursprünglich geplant. Das Vorhaben einst lautete: Love & Peace und viel heile Welt. Dies hatte sich allerdings nach nur wenigen Einspielungen erledigt.
Herausgekommen ist das wohl beste Konzeptalbum. Mit ”Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” war dann auch Schluss mit Live-Auftritten. The Beatles gab es fortan nur noch als Studio-Band.
