For me, Slam Dunk was the anime that made the sports genre anime popular. The drama and comedy in that anime were really something else. I think some or most of the sports anime succeeding Slam Dunk have somehow taken inspiration from its characters and plot: an energetic mc who wanted to excel more in the sports that he wanted to try, mc experiences losing that will motivate him to improve more, mc will get a character improvement then he will taste victory but that will not make him content because he will strive to improve himself more. Until now, I think Slam Dunk is still one of the most popular sports anime—so yeah, I guess it really made the sport anime rose to its fame.
.hack/Sign was one of the first video game Anime I saw. It was not an Isekai but most video game based ones got their start here. There was one character trapped inside the “World” (revealed in one of the first episodes) but its focus on being a more traditional fantasy with light cyberpunk elements made it more fascinating for me.
The anime that I feel greatly popularized the Mecha-Psychological genre was Evangelion. Its approach was something totally different, and that certainly was a before and after in the world of anime. It certainly set a new standard in the Mecha genre, exploring themes such as trauma, and human complexity. In addition to its designs.. Surely it was the first contact with this genre for many, it is a masterpiece that inspired generations of anime creators.
