Plot
The film begins by showing us a world enveloped in an eternal winter, completely abandoned and ruled by animals, while we see how humans live hidden underground. Here we meet James Cole, who seems to be an ex-convict who -as happens with some of his companions in this subway prison- is selected for a special mission in which he will travel to the past to collect information related to the virus that eliminated most of humanity and the secret organization that was behind it all: the 12 Monkeys. He is selected for having a very good memory to remember everything he reads and hears, although his temperament makes him a bit unstable and dangerous. However, when he is sent to the past, the scientists in charge get the date wrong and, instead of sending him to 1996, he is sent to 1990. There he is captured by the police because he assaulted an officer and is now taken to an asylum for claiming to be from the future. At the asylum he meets several mentally ill people, especially one who gives him a tour called Jeffrey Goines who has certain problems. He also meets his psychiatrist, Dr. Kathryn Raily who claims to have seen him before.

This is one of those movies that I will surely have seen only once in my life and have completely forgotten about for a long time because of how little known it is. If it weren't for the fact that it has in its cast two of the greatest actors that have existed in this century (Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt), I wouldn't have recognized it when I recently found it on the internet. Among so many sci-fi movies related to time travel and post-apocalyptic worlds, this is certainly one of the most unique or different ones you can get. Mixing these fictional elements with themes related to psychological problems, overuse of drugs, insanity and ideological views on today's consumer society; it is to be expected that this work made from a more human point of view manages to attract attention with its themes, characters and unique style of representing the sickest thing that can be found in today's humanity. And, of course, since I am such a fan of both science fiction and psychological thrillers, it is a treat for me to have seen this film.

Esta es de esas películas que seguramente habré visto una sola vez en mi vida y he olvidado por completo durante mucho tiempo por lo poco conocida que es. Si no fuera porque tiene en su elenco a dos de los más grandes actores que han existido en este siglo (Bruce Willis y Brad Pitt), no lo hubiera reconocido cuando lo encontré hace poco en internet. Entre tantas películas de ciencia ficción relacionadas a viajes en el tiempo y mundos post-apocalípticos, este sin duda es de los más únicos o diferentes que se pueden conseguir. Y, por supuesto, como soy tan fan tanto de la ciencia ficción como del suspenso y lo psicológico, es para mí una maravilla el haber visto esta película.

From his stay in the insane asylum as well as his next forays, we see how our protagonist is enveloped in a very different environment than what he is used to seeing in his present/future. Unlike the post-apocalyptic world he grew up in, we see how James begins to enjoy being in this era, as well as being able to see sunlight and walk on the earth without fear of being eaten by any animals or killed by toxic air. However, as he tries to get information and help to find the future people responsible for the annihilation of the entire world (the 12 Monkeys), they treat him like an insane person and this will affect him in such a way that he will act in a cruel and uncontrollable way.
The first thing I will say is how ironic is the detail of this plot in which an ex-convict who lived locked in a bunker underground is sent to perform one of the most important missions of this world. At a time when mankind has figured out a way to travel back in time while underground trying to survive, it is funny to see that the fate of a better future or present for our species is in the hands of a criminal with temperament problems. But the most ironic thing is not only that, but that upon being sent to the past, his first experience in this old world is to be greeted and treated as insane, taking him to an insane asylum where he is sedated so he won't try to escape. But, apart from the irony of the whole story and how surreal and unbelievable is the poor way of time travel in this world, we have to accept that they have done a very good job developing the characters we see in this movie, from beginning to end.

Pero lo más irónico no es solo eso, sino que al ser enviado al pasado, su primera experiencia en este viejo mundo sea que lo reciban y lo traten de loco, llevándolo a un manicomio donde lo sedan para que no intente escapar. Honestly, watching a Brad Pitt perform in this role is impressive, the same that I could say about the leading role that Bruce Willis plays (as James Cole) also going from being a simple time traveler to a drugged and unstable man who thinks he is crazy and just wants to live in peace while the world comes to an end.
It is here where we talk about those psychological elements that this plot has where it shows us a world in which the different and senseless is labeled as crazy; while organizations, brands and governments do extreme and inhumane things with the ecosystem, animals and even with their own human species. Now, seeing this dark, self-destructive and miserable world in James Cole's eyes as the present he wishes he could live in -compared to the post-apocalyptic future he comes from- is like a clear and lamentable message to the whole world. But, what gives more impact is not this, but the way in which a human being, being involved in a series of different events divided into two completely different worlds (as is the case of his apocalyptic present and that dark and not at all pretty past of the 90s), begins to develop certain mental disorders to make his reality an illusion or an invention of his incredulous madness. On the other hand, there are the criminal acts and extremist ideals of our antagonist, who presents himself as someone perfect for everyone to label him as crazy, but who shows us that in reality everyone is crazy and not him.

Despite how visually dark, cold, chaotic and desolate the world is in this film, we notice that the way the scenes are made, the camera positions, the focus and the mix of lights and shadows makes it a perfect work for any fan of this dark genre. While the makeup and characters show how disgustingly perverse and deranged human beings can become, it is ironic that among the most normal in appearance are the most evil and cruel. I am also very struck by those elements that we see at the beginning of this post-apocalyptic future, such as the machine that sends people to the past or the head made of screens with which scientists communicate with the protagonist. We also see how the construction of the scenes, dialogues, elements, visions and dreams play a very important role in the development of the main characters. In addition, there are the sound effects that are very well done, although they don't call much attention as the soundtrack, which sounds like a hymn made for madness itself. All in all, this movie is perfect for anyone looking for something that looks almost nothing like a science fiction film.
Personally, I give it an 8/10 rating as far as the sci-fi/suspense genre is concerned.

Además, están los efectos de sonido que están muy bien hechos, aunque no llaman mucho la atención como la banda sonora, que suena como a un himno hecho para la locura misma. En resumen, esta película es perfecta para todo aquel que busca algo que no se parezca casi en nada a una cinta de ciencia ficción.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género de ciencia ficción y suspenso.
