Hello friends, in this new adventure I want to tell you a little bit about this beautiful place called San Felipe El Fuerte Archaeological Park. It is located in the downtown area of San Felipe, Yaracuy state, Venezuela. This historical park keeps the ruins of what was the first city of San Felipe, destroyed by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7 to 8.0 on March 26, 1812.
Hola amigos, en esta nueva aventura les quiero contar un poco sobre este lindo lugar llamado Parque Arqueológico San Felipe El Fuerte. Se encuentra en la zona céntrica de San Felipe, estado Yaracuy, Venezuela. Este parque histórico guarda las ruinas de lo que fue la primera ciudad de San Felipe, destruida por un terremoto con magnitud de 7 a 8.0 el 26 de marzo de 1812.
Getting to the place is very easy, since it is located throughout the downtown area of this small city. Admission is completely free and its hours are from 8 am to 4 pm.It is said that its name, "San Felipe El Fuerte", pays homage to King Philip V. The "Fuerte" was placed after the destruction of the city as a tribute to the survivors of that tragic day. According to history, by that time the city had a population of approximately 7000 inhabitants, leaving at least 5000 under the rubble.
Llegar al lugar es muy fácil, ya que se encuentra en toda la zona centro de esta pequeña ciudad. La entrada es totalmente gratuita y su horario es desde las 8 am hasta las 4 pm.Se dice que su nombre, "San Felipe El Fuerte", rinde homenaje al rey Felipe V. El "Fuerte" fue colocado después de la destrucción de la ciudad en homenaje a los sobrevivientes de ese trágico día. Según la historia, para ese entonces la ciudad tenía una población de aproximadamente 7000 habitantes, dejando al menos 5000 bajo los escombros.
The city managed to prosper again years later thanks to the cultivation mainly of cocoa and coffee. Approximately in 1971, important archaeologists of the country made large excavations, where they found approximately 382 bone fragments and personal objects belonging to the inhabitants of that time, as well as objects from the church that made up this small city. These objects are exhibited in a small museum inside the park, which I could not access because it was closed. I hope to do another post about the museum.
La ciudad logró prosperar nuevamente años después gracias al cultivo principalmente de cacao y café. Aproximadamente en el año 1971, arqueólogos importantes del país hicieron grandes excavaciones, donde se encontraron aproximadamente 382 fragmentos óseos y objetos personales pertenecientes a los habitantes de ese entonces, así como objetos de la iglesia que conformaba esta pequeña ciudad. The city consisted of a church, a jail, squares and some houses of its inhabitants at that time. One of the most valuable items recovered was a baptismal font found underground and placed in its original location. It is said that not even half of the valuable objects of that time were recovered, since they were possibly left deep underground due to the fact that after the earthquake, after 3 days, an important river of the city of that time overflowed, leaving the city underground.
La ciudad estaba conformada por una iglesia, una cárcel, plazas y algunas casas de sus habitantes de ese entonces. Una de las cosas más valiosas recuperadas fue una pila bautismal encontrada bajo tierra y colocada en su lugar de origen. Being in the Archaeological Park, you can observe many species of flora, especially quite old trees dating back many years. In addition, it feels quite peaceful and makes you want to know and read more about its history, which you will always get through the museum and its guides. It was declared a historical park in 1983. It is one of the places that has personally trapped me because of its history and thinking about all the pain that those people went through back then when they lost everything.Since I was a little girl I knew the history of this place, but I had never given it the value it deserved until a few days ago when I went to the park with some friends and we decided to read a little more about its history. Al estar en el Parque Arqueológico, se pueden observar muchas especies de flora, sobre todo árboles bastante antiguos que datan de muchos años. Además, se siente una sensación bastante tranquila y te hace querer conocer y leer más de su historia, la cual conseguirás siempre a través del museo y sus guías. Fue declarado parque histórico en el año 1983. Es uno de los lugares que personalmente me ha atrapado por su historia y al pensar en todo el dolor que vivieron esas personas en ese entonces al perderlo todo.Desde pequeña conocía la historia de este lugar, pero nunca le había dado el valor que se merecía hasta hace unos días que fui al parque con unos amigos y decidimos leer un poco más sobre su historia.
