Have you ever been in a position where you are completely at the mercy of someone. Have you ever been treated unfairly because you are powerless? It’s like being in an uncontrollable train with no control over the twists and turns. At one point in our lives, we have been in a situation where we have been treated unfairly. Whether it is by our superior, friends or even family members. One of the reasons we should be mindful of how we treat others is because our actions can have long-lasting effects. Humans have feelings. We are not robots or planks. We need to be mindful of the words we say and the tone we use. Treating others with kindness and respect can have a positive impact not only on their mood, but also their emotional and mental health.

    MY EXPERIENCE

One thing about me is that I don't enjoy reading school books. It stresses my brain. I also don’t enjoy going to classes under the scorching sun, running to school, and burning late night candles. I don’t like these things. However, I do them because I love good grades. Also, I wouldn't want to waste my fees. Despite the stress, I remain committed. After all, I am paying to learn and grow, and I want to ensure that I am making the most out of my educational investment. That's why I take my studies seriously, even though I don’t enjoy doing it. I take pride in my dedication to my coursework, consistently submitting assignments and maintaining excellent attendance. Since I got into the university, I have never failed to submit an assignment.

Two weeks ago, I got a call from my class governor. I was surprised when his name popped up on my screen. This is because my class governor is always busy with one thing or the other that he rarely calls. Immediately I picked up the phone, he skipped greetings and said “Favour, did you not submit your ELS 311 assignment? Your name is among those that did not submit.” A chill ran down my spine as I realized the implication of his question. Everyone in my department knows it is unlike me not to do and submit assignments. I remember that I clearly did ELS 311 assignment. I clearly remember how I spent hours working on that assignment, I filled up all four pages of a foolscap sheet, putting in all my effort. And now, the lecturer is telling me that my script is missing.

“You know I did this assignment. I don’t joke with assignments.” with the most serious tone ever, I replied him. “I know you, Favour. I can vouch for you that you did the assignment.” He said. Els 311 is the most difficult course I faced last semester. The exam questions were so complex and difficult that some students cried during and after the exam. The exam was difficult for everyone. Despite my best efforts in the exam, I clung to the hope that my assignment marks, worth a significant 30 out of the total grade, would compensate for any shortcomings. The assignment is my last hope. The only glimmer of hope that was snuffed out in an instant when my lecturer declared my script missing. 30 marks is a lot. A whole lot.

“Yes, I did and submitted the assignment. This assignment is 30 marks. I cannot afford to lose it. What is the solution, please?” I asked my class governor. “I’ll give you her contact now. Talk to her about it. Explain everything.” Immediately, I sent a message to the lecturer on WhatsApp. I explained everything to her and asked if anything could be done about it. Hours passed with no response, until finally, in a moment of desperation, I sent a follow-up message. “Just because you have access to a lecturer doesn't mean you should reach out to them whenever you feel like. I cannot do anything about your assignment.” She replied.

I shook my head. My heart started beating fast when I read her message. My hands started trembling. I tried to explain to her that I did that assignment and submitted it. I politely asked if she could check again. Maybe she missed it. It is so frustrating and disheartening to be at the mercy of wicked people. The lecturer sent another message which read “Next time, don’t reach out to a lecturer whenever you feel like.” Come on! Should I have waited for the “perfect time” before I sent the message. After all my pleas, she didn't respond to me.

Now, all the lecturers have marked and submitted the resultsfor last semester’s exam. The results have been approved by the Senate. In a few days, I'll know my fate.

In conclusion, remember to always treat people kindly. Just because you are in a position of authority does not mean you should treat people badly.

    Thanks for reading.
