Silver from The Bermuda Triangle

Today I realized it's been awhile since I shared one of the coins I actually own. Usually I find some interesting items in Long Beach at a couple shops that I like to frequent, but as of late all they have been getting in is true junk silver. That and lots of jewelry which really doesn't interest me very much. So today I decided to go with one I picked up years ago, and to be honest I don't remember where. I think it was at a coin shop in Phoenix, Arizona, but it's origins couldn't be farther away...

This coin was made in the Royal Mint in London, UK for the island nation of Bermuda. I'm sure you've all heard of the triangle associated with the island, and I'll talk about that later in the post. But first up I want to share this nice silver beauty made for Bermuda.

    About the coin:

Although this isn't a particularly ancient coin it's in pretty nice shape for being 61 years old. It is only composed on 50% silver, but I bought it more because of the condition and I have always liked the coat of arms on the reverse (back) of the coin. It's also nice to see a young Queen Elizabeth, something her son will never have on his coins! The silver value is worth a little more than $12, but the numismatic value is probably double that value. Far more than I paid for it all those years ago!

This is a true Island paradise in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. If you ever have the opportunity to visit do not pass up the offer! There is amazing fishing and scuba diving, and amazing beaches. Bermuda isn't one island, it's a chain of 181 islands. Juan de Bermúdez a Spanish explorer is credited with discovering the islands and thus they carry his name.

The dangerous reefs surrounding the islands prevented the Spanish and Portuguese from establishing settlements on the islands. The British colonized the islands only after a shipwreck occurred while carrying supplies and settlers bound for Jamestown. Many of those shipwrecked heard how bad Jamestown was and refused to leave. It was part of the Colony of Virginia originally, an interesting little known factoid.

Now it is a self ruled island chain, but continues to be a British territory. Thus the Queen seen on the obverse (front) of the coin. Their main source of revenue is tourism and fishing. It's just such a pretty place, with pink sand beaches in parts of the islands. Like I said, visit if you ever have the chance, you'll love it!

    Bermuda Triangle

The Bermuda Triangle is an area that extends from Miami, Florida to Puerto Rico and then to Bermuda. I've flown over it many times and even fished in it over the years and somehow, I never vanished. It was first reported in 1950 in the Miami Herald by Edward Van Winkle Jones. From there many authors have claimed to study the area and claim all sorts of disappearances that were mysterious. Some claim it's interdimensional or paranormal, but sadly the real numbers tell us the truth.

Over the years many studies have been done, including by the US Coast Guard, that all concluded there was no higher rate of vessel disappearance in the region than any other part of the ocean. Often claims of disappearances have failed to account for hurricanes at or near the times things have gone missing. There is also now more acceptance that rogue waves may play a factor in ship losses as well.

The insurance company Lloyd's of London had their own evaluation done to determine if higher rates should be charged for craft passing through the triangle. Their conclusion was the same, no higher rate of losses compared to anyplace else. Therefore, the rates for vessels passing through the triangle area aren't charged higher insurance rates. So in all likelihood it's nothing more than a myth. But it's still a great ghost story for Hollywood movies!

That will wrap up my post for today. I hope you enjoyed seeing the nice coin that was produced for Bermuda in London. Please feel free to leave any comments or questions below, and thank you so much to all of you for all of your support. It is deeply appreciated! I hope you all have a great Wednesday!
