Ethical Dilemma: Acting Out of Order for Personal Gain

in voilk •  5 months ago

There have been a few occasions where I acted out of order to achieve something. On most occasions, I tend to try to consider the impact on all parties involved before I delve into a decision or action, and this is probably the reason why I find it hard to come up with what to write on this subject matter, but fortunately something came up today, and it warrants me to act out of order for my own sake, even though I wouldn't have been pleased if such were to be done towards me in business.

I'm sure you must be wondering what it's about and how it all plays out. Well, no need to worry much because I'll be telling you all about it, and you'll find out about it as you read through this article. But before I delve into that, I'm sure most Nigerians here are familiar with the unpalatable heat we're experiencing lately. Even if you ain't a Nigerian, you'll most likely read through some of our entry for the feature prompt on weather, and you'll see there's a similarity in all of our writing. The same weather issue, alongside the current inflation and devaluation of our currency, is what prompted the act that I'm about to share.

So in my bid to curb the effect of the dry season and the heat that comes along with it, I decided to purchase another fan even though I already have one, but this isn't just another fan; it's a simple rechargeable solar fan, which means since it's rechargeable, I wouldn't have to suffer much from the heat when there's no electricity, because since it's rechargeable, it can conserve energy and not just charge with electricity but with sunlight as well.

    First order.

I began my hunt for the standing fan of such specifications but found none around me, so I decided to shop online, and I visited one of the biggest online retailer companies in my country, known simply as Jumia. On Jumia, I was able to see different types of what I wanted, but most were too expensive. But at the end of the day, I saw one that had most of the features I was on the lookout for, and it price was way cheaper than others.

I was to be sold for about 79,000 naira. It's still a huge amount for me, but it's for the best, so I chose it, placed my order, and was given a schedule that the package would arrive sometime around the first few days of March. I didn't pay immediately; instead, I chose the pay on delivery option, and so I was monitoring the order for the past few days until today, when I got a notification that the order had arrived at the pick-up point, so I ought to go to the pickup station to pick up my package.

    SMS notification for pickup.

I was excited it arrived earlier than scheduled, but before I went to the pickup station, I decided to first check the same items on their website and know how much they're sold presently. On getting to their website, I realized the value of the rechargeable solar fan I ordered has reduced dramatically, probably due to how the value of the naira has stabilized lately. The fan is now listed to be sold for just 60,000 naira, and the one I ordered, which was the same product, was 79,000 naira.

Seeing the huge 19,000 naira difference in value now compared to the one I ordered that has arrived for me to go pick up, I instantly concluded within my mind that I won't be going to pick up the fan that just arrived; instead, I will place another order and get the same items at a cheaper rate. This, in my opinion, will help me save some money, which can be channeled into something else.

    New order.

While this is a good idea for me, I know it's bad and more like a selfish act because the company already wasted some money to ship the package down to Nigeria, and me placing another order would mean they'll be shipping another package, not knowing that I won't be going to pick up the first order I placed.

If I were a business owner and someone did that to me, I wouldn't be pleased in any way, but then I've no choice; there's no way I'll let a whole 19,000 naira go in this hard economy we're presently going through, so I hope the company understands the reason why I'm doing what I did. On a good note, I've even tried to cancel the first order, but I've not been able to locate the cancel order button.

According to them, I've got 5 days to come pick up the package before it's returned back to their factory. I guess if they didn't see me come and they checked the orders, they should know why I did what I did and why I'm opting not to come pick up the first order.

That's about it. I hope you had a good read. Do have a wonderful day and stay blessed.
