When I first started working on a work-for-housing exchange basis, I was excited about the idea of getting to know different establishments. In previous years I had visited many hostels as a guest, but this time, being on the other side, the experience would be different. The first hostel I worked at in El Bolsón this summer was located on the way up the imposing Piltriquitrón Mountain and from the pictures I had seen before arriving, the place looked beautiful. This made me even more eager to go work there, so much so that I wanted to stay all summer. But plans didn't turn out exactly as I had hoped 🙃.
Cuando apenas empecé a trabajar bajo la modalidad de intercambio de trabajo por alojamiento, me emocionaba la idea de conocer distintos establecimientos. En años anteriores había conocido muchos hostels estando como huésped, pero esta vez, estando del otro lado, la experiencia sería diferente. El primer hostel en el que trabajé en El Bolsón este verano se encontraba camino a la subida del imponente Cerro Piltriquitrón y por las fotos que había visto antes de llegar, el lugar parecía hermoso. Esto me dio aún más ganas de ir a trabajar ahí, tanto que me quería quedar todo el verano. Pero los planes no resultaron exactamente como esperaba 🙃.
My first two volunteer experiences in San Juan and then in Ushuaia were more than satisfactory for me. Exchanging a few hours of work per day in exchange for a living space and the chance to get to know the surroundings seemed fair to me. In both opportunities, I felt that the benefit was mutual: while I was cleaning or attending the reception of the hostel for the owners, they did not charge me for my stay so I had enough time and money to invest in other outings. By organizing my time properly, I got to see a lot of great places ❣️.
Mis dos primeras experiencias de voluntariado en San Juan y luego en Ushuaia fueron más que satisfactorias para mí. Intercambiar algunas horas de trabajo por día a cambio de un espacio para vivir y de paso poder conocer los alrededores me parecía algo justo. En ambas oportunidades, sentí que el beneficio fue mutuo: mientras que yo limpiaba o atendía la recepción del hostel para los dueños, ellos no me cobraban la estadía así que tenía tiempo y dinero suficiente para invertir en otros paseos. Organizando mi tiempo adecuadamente, logré conocer un montón de lugares geniales ❣️.
I was so excited about the two satisfying experiences that I took it upon myself to get a third one and it was in El Bolsón, in the province of Río Negro. The high summer season was approaching, so in this case, the owners of the place made it a requirement that I had to stay the whole season, from December to the end of March. My first impression was that it was quite a long time, but El Bolsón is such a beautiful destination with so many shelters and treks to do that I was willing to stay as long as they asked me to 🙃.
Estaba tan emocionada por las dos experiencias satisfactorias que me ocupé de conseguir una tercera y fue en El Bolsón, en la provincia de Río Negro. Ya se acercaba la temporada alta de verano, por lo que en este caso, los dueños del lugar pusieron como requisito que tenía que quedarme toda la temporada, desde diciembre hasta fines de marzo. Mi primera impresión fue que era bastante tiempo, pero El Bolsón es un destino tan hermoso y con tantos refugios y trekkings para hacer que estaba dispuesta a quedarme todo el tiempo que ellos me pedían 🙃.
When the first day of going to the hostel finally arrived, I found that it was quite far from the city center, and about 2 km up the mountain on the way to Piltri. Although I had already checked these distances on the map, seeing them materialized while I was in the cab shocked me. I remember thinking “I'm going to have to walk all this when I want to buy something” and although that was already starting to be a bit of a problem, I decided to ignore it because I could still make it work 🙂.
Cuando finalmente llegó el primer día de ir al hostel, me encontré con que quedaba bastante alejado del centro de la ciudad, y a unos 2 km montaña arriba camino al Piltri. Si bien yo ya había revisado estas distancias en el mapa, verlas materializadas mientras iba en el taxi me impactó. Me acuerdo que pensaba "todo esto voy a tener que caminar cuando quiera ir a comprar algo" y aunque eso ya empezó siendo un pequeño problema, decidí ignorarlo porque todavía podía hacerlo funcionar 🙂.
As for the hostel facilities, the space was as nice as the pictures showed. It was a small cabin in a large green park, overlooking the mountains and also the town. Everything was super clean, spotless and perfumed, almost like hotel quality but at a much cheaper price. I liked this a lot because I had never been in a hostel as neat and cared for as that one: honestly, in these shared accommodations you never find such meticulous cleanliness as that and that gave me a good first impression 😃.
En cuanto a las instalaciones del hostel, el espacio era tan lindo como lo mostraban las fotos. Se trataba de una pequeña cabaña en un gran parque verde, con vista a las montañas y también al pueblo. Todo estaba super limpio, impecable y perfumado, casi como calidad hotelera pero a un precio mucho más económico. Esto me gustó mucho porque nunca había estado en un hostel tan prolijo y cuidado como ese: honestamente, en estos alojamientos compartidos nunca encontras una limpieza tan meticulosa como esa y eso me dio una buena primera impresión 😃.
The next day, we had a meeting with the owners and all my coworkers. We took the opportunity to get to know each other and they told us precisely what the exchange would be like. In total, I had to work six hours a day in exchange for two days off, breakfast and lodging. This amount of time did not seem so much to me, but the problem was that it was four hours in the morning and two in the evening. It is true that we had the afternoon free, but being in such a remote place and on foot, it was quite difficult to take advantage of that time to walk around because of all that it cost to go down and back up to the hostel. My face must have noticed my displeasure because the owner stared at me until I forced a smile 😂.
Al día siguiente, tuvimos una reunión con los dueños y con todos mis compañeros de trabajo. Aprovechamos para conocernos entre todos y ellos nos comunicaron precisamente cómo sería el intercambio. En total, tenía que trabajar seis horas diarias a cambio de dos días libres, desayuno y alojamiento. Esta cantidad de tiempo no me parecía tanta, pero el problema era que eran cuatro horas por la mañana y dos por la noche. Es cierto que nos quedaba la tarde libre, pero al estar en un lugar tan retirado y a pie, aprovechar ese tiempo para pasear era bastante difícil por todo lo que costaba bajar y volver a subir hasta el hostel. Mi cara habrá notado mi disgusto porque el dueño me quedó mirando hasta que forcé una sonrisa 😂.
By the time he told us precisely what the tasks were, we all understood why the hostel was so impeccable. Both owners were quite demanding in terms of the level of cleanliness and at the beginning of each day, they made us a list of everything we had to clean, with a very precise level of detail. At the end of the shift, one of them would come to check that everything had been done correctly. At first, this was a little uncomfortable for me because in my previous exchanges no one was so on top of me checking everything I was doing, but eventually I got used to cleaning and doing things the way they wanted. To this day I apply those strict cleaning methodologies in my daily life because I liked that everything was so sparkling clean 😅.
Al momento de indicarnos precisamente cuáles eran las tareas, todos entendimos por qué el hostel estaba tan impecable. Ambos dueños eran bastante exigentes en cuanto al nivel de limpieza y al principio de cada día, nos hacían una lista de cada cosa que teníamos que limpiar, con un nivel de detalle muy preciso. Al finalizar el turno, uno de ellos venía a revisar que todo se haya hecho correctamente. Al principio, esto me resultó algo incómodo porque en mis intercambios anteriores nadie estuvo tan encima mío revisando todo lo que hacía, pero al fin de cuentas me acostumbré a limpiar y hacer las cosas como ellos querían. Hasta el día de hoy aplico esas metodologías de limpieza estrictas en mi vida diaria porque me gustó que todo quedara tan reluciente 😅.
While the job itself was not bad, what proved to be a conflict for me and my coworkers was the issue of the cut schedule. The days went by and we all noticed how difficult it was to go for a walk in peace, because even though you worked in the morning, you had a schedule to keep at night as well. In addition, having to walk 4 km to the center of town alone was quite a burden, considering that half of the walk back was up a mountain. The owner noticed this discomfort in us and did not hesitate to scold us about it, until his solution ended up being that “we should look for another volunteer”. I almost started to cry because I felt kicked out, but the next day I started looking for a job in another hostel and luckily I got one, with better hours and only three blocks from the main square 😃.
Si bien el trabajo en sí no estaba mal, lo que resultó en conflicto para mí y para mis compañeros fue el asunto del horario cortado. Pasaban los días y todos notabamos lo difícil que era ir a pasear en paz, porque a pesar de haber trabajado en la mañana, tenías un horario que cumplir también por la noche. Además, el hecho de tener que caminar 4 km solo hasta el centro del pueblo era bastante pesado, contando que a la vuelta la mitad eran subiendo una montaña. El dueño notó esta incomodidad en nosotros y no dudó en increparnos al respecto, hasta que su solución terminó siendo que "nos buscáramos otro voluntariado". Yo casi me pongo a llorar porque me sentí echada, pero al día siguiente me puse a buscar trabajo en otro hostel y por suerte conseguí, con mejores horarios y a solo tres cuadras de la plaza principal 😃.
In the end, what I thought would be a four-month stay ended up lasting only two weeks. Being displaced from volunteering because the conditions were not good was something I had never taken into consideration, but from now on it makes me be more specific when looking for this type of exchange. Now, the first thing I ask myself is what my specific schedules are going to be, and I prefer hostels in central locations and not so far away since I don't have a car. I wouldn't exactly say that my experience in this hostel was bad, but that it just wasn't for me. I suppose this quiet and remote location will work for those more hermit-like travelers, but I just happened to be sociable and restless. And in the final balance, I was glad I changed hostels because I ended up meeting many of my fellow travelers in this hostel ❤️.
Al final, la estadía que yo pensaba que serían cuatro meses terminó durando apenas dos semanas. Que me desplazaran de un voluntariado porque las condiciones no eran buenas era algo que yo nunca había tenido en consideración, pero que de ahora en más me hace ser más específica a la hora de buscar este tipo de intercambios. Ahora, lo primero que pregunto es cuáles van a ser mis horarios específicos, y prefiero que sean hostels en lugares céntricos y no tan alejados ya que no tengo vehículo. No diría exactamente que mi experiencia en este hostel fue mala, sino que simplemente no era para mí. Supongo que este lugar tan calmo y alejado funcionará para aquellos viajeros más ermitaños, pero justo a mí me tocó ser sociable e inquieta. Y haciendo un balance final, me alegré haber cambiado de hostel porque ahí terminé conociendo a muchos de mis amigos actuales ❤️.
