Introducing the newest member of our family, KitKat. When we found her, she was very malnourished and we think it stunted her growth. We were debating whether or not she was still a kitten or a fully grown cat. Then we decided to name her KitKat, like the candy bar for that reason. Kitten/Cat KitKat. LOL
Some of you might remember we had a blizzard back on Christmas 2022 and a small community of cats moved into our garage. We began putting food and water out there for them so they didn't have to leave during the storm.
After the storm, they didn't seem to bother anything so we just let them live in the garage so they had a safe place to live. There are 3 of them and a year later they've pretty much became honorary members of our family.
These are the other two cats, Snoopy and Shadow. They hang out by the door in the morning and around 5 PM for breakfast and dinner. Snoopy is black and white, but we named her Snoopy because she always comes snooping around when she hears my voice in the house. 🤣
Snoopy lets me pet her and hold her, Shadow wont let anyone get too close to her. Although, Shadow might be a boy cat. We're not sure, and there's no way to tell if we cant get close.
The short story is these cats are all feral. They lived under my neighbors stairs in front of her house. They weren't really her cats, but she fed them and took care of them for the most part. She moved away and the neighborhood stepped in and took care of them, leaving out food and water for them when they could.
When the Christmas blizzard rolled in, they discovered our garage and made themselves right at home. They never left.
After about a year all the cats got really used to us. KitKat started coming in the house. As far as I know I'm the only person in the neighborhood Snoopy lets hold her and pet her. Shadow wants NOTHING to do with people at all. He'll come near me and meow, but wont let me pet him. If I hold out my hand, he comes near and sniffs it, but rarely lets me pet him. He let me pet him twice. I call him, him, because I just get a male vibe from him. He generally hisses at most people if they get too close. LOL.
KitKat started coming in the house at breakfast and dinner time. We let her in the house one day and she got along fine with the dog. We decided she could stay. The other cats won't come in the house. We even tried getting them in the basement during the last storm, but they wanted no part of it.
Surprisingly, KitKat doesn't get along with my cat Buddy. He lives in the apartment upstairs. Buddy wants to be friends, but KitKat hisses at him and gets really vocal about not wanting to be around him. So Buddy gets the upper floor, and KitKat gets the lower floor shared with the dog. Stranger things have happened I guess. KitKat and the dog get along great though.
So KitKat spends most of her time in the house now. Snoopy is her mother, we know this because she was born in the neighbors garage. She gave birth to two kittens. KitKat lived, the other got hit by a car :(
Kit Kat goes out in the morning when Shadow and Snoopy show up for breakfast. When they return at dinner, she comes in for the night, and the other cats retire to the garage. It's actually really cute. We were a little worried about taking her away from her mother but this arrangement seems to be working out.
The vet said she looks healthy. KitKat got her shots, and she's getting "fixed" next month. I'm not crazy about that idea, but we have enough feral cats in the neighborhood. She still has her freedom though and joins her little community each morning after breakfast. She's a great addition to the family.
