Inicios
A Pinar del Río le cabe el honor de tener grandes deportistas y haberle dado muchas alegrías al país. En su tierra, además del cultivarse el mejor tabaco del mundo, parece que los luchadores se dan como los excelentes habanos que salen de sus fábricas, si usted lo duda le dejo tres nombres: Héctor Milián, Alejandro Puerto y Mijaín López. Nacido el 1ro de octubre de 1964 tuvo sus inicios a los doce años en el deporte de boxeo. Pronto la madre lo alejaría para siempre de este deporte.
El comienzo en la lucha libre se produjo por pura casualidad y en los viajes que hacía para acompañar al novio de una prima al gimnasio comenzó a practicarlo por embullo y, este “amor a primera vista” le duraría hasta 1996, año que dijo adiós al deporte activo.
Comienzan los títulos
Cuando estaba por cumplir los 14 años de edad es premiado con la medalla de oro en los Juegos Escolares Nacionales, en la división de 44kgs y un año después alcanza la corona panamericana en la categoría juvenil. Comenzaba a tejerse una historia que en esta primera etapa y sin cumplir los 20 años se agrandaría con la medalla de bronce en los Juegos Panamericanos desarrollados en Caracas, Venezuela 1983.
Obstáculos olímpicos
A partir de este momento una idea fija rondaba su cabeza: participar en unos Juegos Olímpicos y subir a la gloria destinada a los campeones. Mucho tuvo que luchar y perseverar porque Cuba no participó en las olimpiadas de 1984 y 1988. Una nueva lesión peligra su continuidad
El año anterior a la olimpiada se inicia para el luchador con un optimismo tremendo y con una confianza infinita en sus posibilidades. Sin embargo, la vida le jugó una mala pasada al sufrir la ruptura del bíceps derecho en el certamen internacional Cerro Pelado, con sede en la provincia de Las Tunas. Por esta razón tuvo que ser intervenido quirúrgicamente lo que provocó que se alejara unos cuantos meses de los colchones.
La voluntad y las ganas de participar en los Juegos Panamericanos de 1991, desarrollados en Cuba, lo hicieron competir sin estar recuperado definitivamente. Después de ganar los cuatro combates de su grupo, se enfrentó por el título al estadounidense Brad Penrith. En este combate sufrió una apertura de la herida y perdió por decisión de 3-1.
