The business grows when friends and family pay.

    Hello, everyone.

Welcome to my blog and another wonderful edition of the Hive Learners' featured post. So many people got to learn the hard way that, on no account, business and love should coexist; it's the wrong way to go about any business. In so many cases, I tend not to blame people who avoid doing business with family and loved ones. In most cases, business with a loved one always ends in loss and does not end as planned.

When we carry out business with a loved one, we become weak and cannot do things like what is expected of us. Since a loved one is involved, we try not to be as strict as we are supposed to, and we relax since we trust them to deliver and hold up their end of the bargain, but many loved ones use that as an opportunity to strike and take everything for their own advantage, leaving one with nothing.

Years ago, my mom owned a boutique. The cushions in the boutique were bad and needed to be changed. We live in Yobe State, which is about a 4 or 5 hour drive to Kano State. My mom was referred to a man who does offostery there in Yobe State, but since her elder brother, who lives in Kano State, is also into the business (offostery), she decided to give him the deal instead of giving it to an outsider who lives nearby.

She told him that when she needed the cushions delivered, all because she wanted to do business with family, she did not even mind the distance as well as paying for the delivery by train then. The cushion was supposed to be delivered in 3 weeks, but a month passed and there was no news from him. He stopped responding to calls, and when they call him with a different number, he picks up, and the moment he hears her voice or that of my dad, he hangs up. It was like a dream; my dad was already mad at her, but she kept saying her brother can't do what my dad is thinking; then why won't he talk?

It continued that way until one Saturday morning, when she decided to travel to Kano State to go see him face-to-face and, from there, know what the problem was. She came back with a sad face that proved that dad was right all along; he used her own money to settle his bills and couldn't get another to get the materials needed to get her work done. He spent both money for the cushion and money for delivery, waited for months, and he still couldn't deliver, and she had to spend another money to work with an outsider which is what she was avoiding, and the outsider delivered a clean work in weeks.

Will she ever make decisions based on sentiments again?

She learned her lesson the hard way, once bitten twice shy, and now she does her business without any sentiments. Don't let love or family come in the way once business is involved. When it's time for business, stick to it and keep it professional.
