Hello everyone :)!
Tomorrow (29th of December) is a significant day for Croatia as we citizens head to cast our vote for the presidential election. This important event is not only a cornerstone of democracy but also a chance for the people to decide on the direction the country will take in the years to come. Whether or not will that be a good or bad decision..
For me personally, this election carries an extra layer of responsibility and pride as I take on the role of president of the election board. It’s a role that comes with the great duty of ensuring that the voting process runs smoothly, securely, and transparently!
You might be wondering, what is the role of the Election Board!?
The election board is a team of people (on this elections that aren’t in any political parties) responsible for managing the polling station on the election day. As the president of this board, I oversee a wide range of duties, including:
• Ensuring the room is set up according to regulations.
• Verifying voter lists and checking voter IDs.
• Managing the flow of voters to avoid delays or confusion.
•Addressing any issues that may arise, such as questions about eligibility or process.
• Counting the votes once the polls close.
• Filling out and submitting all necessary paperwork to the electoral commission (DIP).
It’s a role that demands precision, fairness, and a strong sense of accountability, as even a small mistake can have significant consequences.
This is how I prepare for the Election Day.
Today, my team and I met up to prepare the polling station. From arranging the voting booths to organizing the voter lists and securing the ballot boxes, every detail matters and nothing cannot be overlooked or ignored. The room is now ready to welcome voters tomorrow morning at 7 am, with everything in place to ensure a seamless process.
How Does the Voting Process Work?
Polling stations will open at 7:00 AM and close at 7:00 PM. Voters must bring a valid ID to confirm their identity and will cast their votes by marking their chosen candidate on a ballot paper. After voting, they place the ballot into a sealed ballot box.
Once the polls close, the election board begins the process of counting votes. Each ballot is examined (is it clear what was the wish of the voter, did they circle anyone or write their own candidate - in that case the ballot isn’t counted), and the results are recorded on official forms that are then submitted to the State Electoral Commission (Državno izborno povjerenstvo).
In past elections, challenges such as long queues, voter misunderstandings, or even disputes over ballot validity have arisen. As the president of the board, it’s my duty to handle such situations calmly and fairly, ensuring that the process remains transparent and trustworthy. After all I wouldn’t be selected again if I didn’t do my job properly :).
I feel both honored and slightly nervous about this responsibility. Being a part of the process in such a direct way is a unique experience. My goal is to ensure that every voter who comes to our polling station feels confident and safe that their voice is being heard and their vote is being counted.
To my fellow voters;
As we approach election day, I encourage everyone to use their right to vote. Whether you’re deeply invested in politics or just want to make your voice heard, every vote matters. It’s a chance to shape the future of our country.
