I finally put in almost 3 miles of (intermittent) running on a 5.5 mile afternoon exercise.
I felt surprisingly good whole running and my knees were pain-free and my breathing was good as well. I rested in between my longer running sections but it was generally only a short stretch before running again.
I eased back to a brisk walk once my route hot the busy highway section that was a tedious long uphill before an easy half mile down to home.
I have to say I'm surprised on how well I felt after so much time unable to run due to my back and knees.
Now I just hope I can continue to improve and get back to racing.
