We spent the first day in Szeged visiting the sights. It was very clear and sunny weather, suitable for a pleasant walk around the city. Szeged has a lot of cultural and historical sights, and I will describe some of the most interesting to you in the following posts. The first and most impressive historical landmark I saw in this charming Hungarian city was The Votive Church and Cathedral of Our Lady of Hungary.
When we approached, I couldn't believe how big it was. With every look, we discovered its beauty.
It is a Catholic church, one of the largest in Hungary.
It is decorated with imposing sculptures of apostles and saints that tell about the history.
What I learned there was that at the end of the 19th century, Szeged was hit by a terrible flood, so at the beginning of the 20th century, this church was built as a church of salvation as a sign of gratitude to God. That is why it is so big, about 90 meters high.
When we looked at the exterior from all sides and marveled at this church built in the Hungarian Art Nouveau style, we went inside.
It was very impressive inside. We observed frescoes and sculptures.
What impressed my husband the most was the organ.
He had never seen such a big organ with about 9000 pipes. He is a music teacher, so this was an amazing moment for him.
We looked at every corner.
There are stained glass windows through which light shines. And an impressive sculpture of Christ's crucifixion.
This place is definitely more than a church. It is the symbol of the city.
And it has great value both because of the history and the circumstances in which it was built, and because it is an architectural masterpiece.
Thank you very much for reading.
