NYSC CHRONICLES - Joining an Anti-Cancer Community

There is this lecture we are always having everyday at the NYSC camp where different organizations come around to lecture us, different topics get treated and entrepreneurship is encouraged. During one of the lectures earlier today, a foundation came around to lecture us on breast cancer and cervical cancer. They spoke a lot about early discovery of lumps and how important it is for one to be very sensitive to changes that goes on in our bodies, especially as women. Lumps in breasts is something very common to young females and while most are usually non-cancerous, some usually are.

This lecture gave me a flash back about my own episode, where I had to lump surgery twice. The first time, I didn't even know something was wrong with me. I noticed the lump and didn't really pay attention to it because I didn't know what it was. When it got bigger, I got worried and had to ask other girls in my hostel then if it's a normal thing in our bodies but they didn't feel anything like that within them. I started having chest pains and while the lump might have or not be the cause, I just had to have it checked.

The ignorance then was really crazy and if only I knew what it was and had a knowledge about it, it wouldn't even have stayed that long. I got it removed later and the lump grew again about two years after or so, lol. I have told this story here before, I was so scared! I legit thought I had cancer and was already making scenarios in my head. I was so glad when it got tested and came out as Fibroadenoma, a non cancerous breast lump common in so many young women.

When the organization called for volunteers, I didn't think twice before going towards them to join. It is something I have always wanted to do and I will do well to be very active in the community. In fact, I was the first person to join and the first three people that joined were given their branded shirt. We took a group picture and joined their whatsapp community. I look forward to what the foundation has in store. It will be such a great privilege to help more young women discover the abnormalities in their bodies on time and preventing complications. I think it is such a powerful movement and I am glad to become a part of it. I know how scary it can be when you something going on in your body and you have no idea about what it is. Making young females aware of these things just feels so right, I wish I had that then.

    Thanks for reading ❤️
