Halfling Refugee - New Strong Filler Card

in voilk •  2 days ago

    Hello Everyone

Welcome to my first Splinterlands post in 2025. I would like to say Happy New year to you all, although it is a bit late, but I wish this year the bullrun will make us alive again.

Ok back to the splinterlands game. I played this game a few days ago and I realize that I have got 125.000 Glint balance. This is so exciting, My glint was more than enough to get me aanother Gold foil EPIC soulbound reward card form the shop, and this means I will start this year with a new Gold Foil Epic Reward card.

I have got my first gold foil epic reward card a month ago, so today I am going to get another one. It is the second one, I wonder which card that will pop out now...

I get a Halfling Refugee. I do not like this one however it is a neutral element so I believe in long run, this card will be very useful.

Anyway for you who are new here and do not know me in detail, I play on Gold Foil Brawl fray in my guild. It's been for more than a year that I choose to play in Gold Foil only, that's why I see no benefit buying regular foil soulbound card.

Personally I see Halfling Refugee is one hell strong filler card. You can not expect 1 mana card to be super strong, but having 0 to 1 mana card sometime can be crucial to break your opponent meta or outsmart your opponent by having extra units.

Stat-wise, Halfling Refugee has 3 melee damage, which is quite ridiculous for 1 mana card. he is not a sloth or a snail here, 3 speed is more than ok. And on level 3, he can heal himself. This is exactly what you expect from a unit from higher rarity.

So why do I say I am not fond of getting him this round? Well the answer is simple, because Chaos Legion set has several 1 mana unit, so currently halfling refugee won't be seen as something that special because he has some subtitutes here... although overal Halfling Refugee is still stronger.

However after Chaos Legion will be moved to wild format, This Halfling Refugee will be a disaster for your opponent. Rebellion Set doesn't have 0 or 1 mana units, so Halfling Refugee existence will be irreplaceable.

Ok let's check our battle now

    HIGHLIGHTED BATTLE

This is the first battle I use this gold foil Halfling Refugee in this account. I have played him several times in a leased/scholar account so I won't be pretending that I am super surprised here. Because this is the premier use of this card, and also the first win I have got, so like it or not this battle will become special for my Halfling Refugee here.

We have a Melee Mayhem and Aimless ruleset here. Usually I would pick a Death Element here or Life Element, however I want to showcase my recently acquire Halfling Refugee, so I will use water element here. In general, these are my strategy here:

    1. I pick water over Life element due to Keyla Frendul summoner. She gives an armor which is good if I meet Tarsa, and her +1 speed will be crucial against any opponent here. Tarsa is a good choice too, but I don't have / bring the unit I want to have in Tarsa Squad.
    2. My Line up will be focusing on melee. I will bring one support, which is Swamp Spitter.
    3. I use several tanks in front, with Shield abilities. If my opponent do not focus on Magic, this line up should be strong enough to compete with any opponents.

Ok let's see how this would go

    image.png

    • The battle started with both side buffing their team and debuffing their opponent. Both of us using the same meta, however we picked different element here.
    • They came with 20 Melee damage and 2 range damage, which made a combined 22 damage per round.
    • My team had 13 Melee damage, and 2 range damage. So we had a combined 15 per round.
    • My opponent hit harder here, but my team would move faster and we had several shield ability. This should be interesting.

    • Drybone Megalodon indeed was dangerous, I forgot he had retaliate ability. Luckily we put him down in the first round.

    image.png

    • This time my team managed to shut down their Forgotten One. They did not bring a better leveled one, who had a retaliate ability too. Well it's their big lost there.

    image.png

    • this time my team eliminated their Tenyii Striker. Now it became 6 vs 3 now.

    image.png

    • Round 5 started with 2 vs 6. This was the last round for this battle.

    image.png

    • It was a flawless victory. Drybone Megalodon indeed was strong, however Commander Slade was far more dangerous here. He was the sole reason why they lost badly here.

    Halfling Refugee Is Indeed Strong.

The battle was actually dominated by Commander Slade, which he single handedly outclassed all incoming attacks. However one unit only won't be able to carry a whole team especially if it is above 40 mana cap battle.

Ok let's see how my backline unit at the end of this battle.

This is the part where Halfling Refugee can be said strong or maybe very strong if we consider it only demand 1 mana. From these 5 backline units, all of them manage to have more than 3 speed. OK let's make exception for Grimbardun Figther, he is slow for god sake.

However from offensive perspective, all are in the same horizon. Speed on 3 to 5, with damage rate on 3 to 4. So all of them are the same lethal and they will tend to move all together. In this case, one of them is actually only cost you 1 mana cap. I could not bring the Coastal Sentry who demands 10 mana if I do not have Halfling Refugee to compensate the mana requirement.

Well, things will be different if we have 99 mana cap. But we can not take that kind of attitude, IF... IF.. into the game. You have a battle, you need to win with your line up. that's all, no need to if if if here. And this battle proves that Halfling Refugee indeed strong.

that's all for today post, and Thanks for coming and let's meet in Splinterlands Battles!!
