I read some news a few weeks ago that someone was picking up Boletus somewhere in Poland. Those of you who live in the Northern Hemisphere might know that this is definitely not the time for these mushrooms to grow. They show up in the late summer and fall when the temperature drops a bit and there is enough rain. It looks like they got very confused...

Back to the lovely, round puffballs, though. These I found in the fall while walking around forests. Not too many, and they are not the easiest to spot either. Small, brown, or beige balls hide well among fallen leaves and dead grasses.

Except for these yellow ones. This group I could see from a distance. They found a nice spot inside a rotten stump, as if they were hiding in the little, cozy house from all the nasty stuff outside. Smart :)

They were also much bigger than the usual brown, spiky ones. The largest one was about the size of an apple. The skin resembles a lovely, crunchy roll or an oatmeal cookie.

It was the only time that I saw these. And when I went back to the same spot some days later, they were still there.

And that was the only spot where I have seen this specific type.
Other, more common to me I could find puffballs here and there throughout the forest. Some would grow very close to the road on sandy, grassy patches.

Small, more like a walnut and covered in tiny little needles, or something that looks like wet fur.
    Adorable little things.
