Walking at a seaside town will eventually lead you to the sea, one way or another. And if there is a medieval castle and colourful fishing boats there, that's even better!
You know that I am a sucker for scenic little ports and the Venetian port of Iraklio is definitely one of them! So despite the heat, I followed the flocks of tourists and pretended to be one of them for a while :)
Last time I was there, this fancy floating pier didn't exist and I suspect that they didn't built it for the fishermen. I guess there would be more changes soon. But till then I like the contrast of the brand new pier with the humble fishing boats, some of them so old that they hardly float :)
The new port with its monstrous machinery and the huge ferries (one of which brought me here) is just around the corner, a few minutes walking away. This is partly the reason, along with the seaside motorway that there is only one fortress in the sea (they were two) and just a few stone-built arched shipyards and warehouses (they were many).
The price of progress, I guess.
Anyway this is still a lovely place to spend some time and take a lot of pictures:)
Because after all, it's all in the sea!
