If I was told 10 years ago that there would be a time when the world would be in total lockdown and that most people would resort to remote jobs, I would never have believed. The ‘VID introduced the world to remote jobs and at the time, it wasn't optional; you either work remotely or you do not work at all. Times have changed and certain things have become new norms.
Many people have come to accept the remote working concept as it favours them. However, some people still kick against it and they have very valid reasons to do so. Personally, I love staying indoors so automatically remote jobs should be a perfect fit for me but I beg to differ. I stand somewhere in between remote jobs and office jobs, why? Because inasmuch as I love working from the comfort of my home, there are certain cons that accompany remote jobs.
Distractions At Home
If we can all be honest, working from home isn't exactly the easiest, especially when we have responsibilities at home. Some people have come up with creative methods of working from home like secluding their home offices from the rest of the house. Some even go as far as mimicking a real office setting but that real office “discipline” wouldn't prevail.
You could be working from home and all of a sudden, you remember that you didn't take the trash out and so you head out to do so. Once you return, you grab yourself a cup of coffee and then go ahead to do something else and before you know it, time is far spent. In the end, you either procrastinate to the next day or you force yourself to stay up all night, doing the work that you could have easily done during the day if you weren't too distracted.
Work Life Balance
This is another very interesting con. I recently saw an article where the writer clearly stated that home is supposed to be a place for relaxation after a long day at work but when we eventually turn our homes to our work place then where do we go to after work?
People who work from home find it difficult to balance their professional life and their personal life as both of them seem to happen in the same place. For those who actually have a family, it can create an impact on the family bond. Take for instance, you are having movie night with the family and all of a sudden you remember a project that is due in two days or the prices of a particular token rises and you want to make the most of the opportunity. You would certainly excuse yourself from the rest of the humans you live with and head on to work.
For those who do not have a family, they spend every single second of their time working. This only proves the fact that most successful people who work from home usually turn out to be workaholics.
Although there are numerous cons to working at home, there are also some very appealing advantages that come with working from home.
Flexibility
Flexibility in terms of work hours and location is guaranteed when working from home. You get to create a schedule that is ideal. Also you can decide to work from your rose garden or from the airy garage, the decision is totally yours to make.
Cost Saving
This applies to both the companies and the workers. One reason why people work from home is the fact that both the company and the workers save a lot of money. Workers do not bother with transportation or luxurious office wear and on the other hand, companies do not spend so much money on office/ workers maintenance. It is a win-win for both parties.
Global Talent Pool
This is certainly another perk of remote jobs. Companies get to access skilled individuals from all over the globe irrespective of their location. This is really a big flex and the talent pool is endless.
I have had a taste of both experiences( working offline and online) and I would say that working offline can be tiring and draining especially if you do not like the job you do or if the person(s) you work for is(are) always on your neck. On the flip side, remote jobs are usually according to your terms and schedule. One major challenge for me when I worked as a teacher was time. For some reason, I was always almost late for work and after school, I had to spend time waiting for parents to come and pick up their kids. Don't get me wrong, I loved being with the kids but there were a few setbacks.
In conclusion, the decision is totally personal. If you have enough stamina to run around, beat the clock every morning and return home at a particular time, then office jobs are for you. But if you decide that you want to work on your own terms then offline jobs are for you.
