Goodbye Winter

Good riddance, don't let me catch you around here no more! I reckon we'll get to enjoy at least a couple weeks of spring before either it snows again or summer starts. Maybe both. Does it even count as spring anymore? More like tornado season.

All the gold in California couldn't make me fond of winter. All the gold in Kentucky neither, and we've got Fort Knox just down the Dixie Highway. We ain't seen snow in close to a month now, these photos are from earlier in the year.

It's already gotten up into shorts weather a few times this year but the temp keeps dropping back down again. Around here they say not to plant nothing until after the Kentucky Derby, which is always the first Saturday in May. It's usually warm enough to plant before then, but Mother Nature likes to throw in a surprise cold snap every now and again to wipe out anything getting ahead of the horses.

All these are from the Frederick Law Olmsted designed Iroquois Park here in the South End. The park is basically a 725 acre forested hill, with a prairie and oak savanna atop it on Burnt Knob. Wandering it on a recent unseasonably warm day was a bit surreal, it felt like late spring going on early summer but everything around was still quite dead or dormant.

Winter's drab hues weren't nearly as oppressive in the warmer weather, but it's past time for a palette cleanser. Goodbye Winter, I'll be cussin' in tongues if I see you around these parts again.
