Silent companion

Once upon a time, in the city of Lagos, lived a very beautiful girl named Dayo.
Dayo was born on the day her father died; she never gets to see him or experience what fatherly love is all about.

But her mother always tells her about her father and what he looks like in pictures, so Dayo gets to know the father through the pictures she was shown, and she always wishes she could see her father, even if it is only once.

She grows up with her mother and two brothers. Dayo was a special child; she had everything at her beck and call. Her mother makes sure she is comfortable as the only girl in the family.

As Dayo grows older, she begins to hear whispers everywhere she goes.
At first, she dismissed it and called it her imagination but she never related it to her mother or brothers.

One day, while Dayo was walking home from school, lost in thought. As she turned onto her street, a chill ran down her spine. She felt eyes upon her. She paused and shouted who is there but she got no response

She dismissed it as paranoia. But the sensation persisted. She quickened her pace.

Suddenly, a faint whisper echoed in her ear: "Don't be afraid am always with you."

Dayo spun around, but there was no one. The darkness seemed to swallow everything, as she was walking through a narrow Alley.

She rushed home, locked the door behind her, shut the windows, and crept into her blankets. But the feeling lingered. Dayo made a sign of the cross on her body; she was so scared that when her mother opened her door, she jumped up and fell on the hard tiles, thinking it was the person following her, not knowing it was her mother.

Dayo says to her mom. Mom can you please knock, when next you are entering my room
Her mother gave her the look, are you okay?

Me!!, your mother should knock on your door before entering, since when, did that one start, you that sleep like a log of wood
Anyways, that's not why I am here; why did you run pass me like that without greeting and what is chasing you, her mom asked her, looking straight into her eyes.

Dayo looked at her mom, sturred to express herself, I was pressed, that's why I am sorry, ma. I ran in to use the toilet
Her mom looked at her and sight, told her to come down for dinner, to which she said yes ma

Dayo kept having this feeling of being followed anytime she was alone. She confided in her mom one day.

"Mom, I'm been followed". Her mother looked up from what she was doing and asked her," By who"?. She paused and turned around like she was making sure nobody was there.
    I don't know, Mom, I hear voices.
Her mom told her not to worry is her imagination and nothing much.

She agreed with her mom, maybe she was thinking too much
Days passed, and the sensation grew stronger. Dayo noticed subtle changes: moved objects, faint scents, and almost imperceptible footprints.
Sometimes, it is as if someone is walking around in her room. Whenever she leaves her room scattered, it will be arranged before she comes back.

One night, she decided to confront her stalker. As she stepped outside, a figure emerged from the shadows.

    "Who are you?" Dayo demanded.

The figure remained silent, its presence suffocating.

Dayo asked again. "who are you show yourself"

    A voice echoed "am here"
Turning around, she saw her father smiling and wearing the same denim jacket that he had worn in the picture her mom always showed her. Dayo's heart skipped a beat.

"Dad," Dayo said, her voice bearly above a whisper.

Her father figure stood there smiling at her without saying a word.

Dayo asked, "Dad, have you been following me."
    "Yes dear answered her father

Were you the one that spoke to me in the alley" she questioned.
"Yes my darling, I 'm always around you, cleaning up after you," said her father

Dayo ran inside, calling everybody to come and see their father, but when they came out. They couldn't see anything.

Dayo's mom and brothers became worried about her, "Dayo, are you okay? Your dad died the day you were born, so you can't possibly be seeing him.

No, Dad is standing right here, pointing to the direction her father is standing.

Dad, say something to them, dayo said turning to her father's figure in front of her

Her father smiled and told her it was only her who could see him; the rest of the family couldn't.

As her father's figure vanished, dayo realized the horrifying truth: her stalker, who was her father, was not of this world. Dayo can to the reality that what she has wished for has finally come to pass.

Dayo looked from her mom to her brothers, not knowing how to convince them that her father was standing right in front of them and she walked inside.
Leaving them wondering, If she is having a mental breakdown.
