A World Of Sound

We are all built differently with unique dislikes, likes, opinions, and perspectives. Each individual is drawn to different things, and that doesn’t make us weird; it makes us unique. All my life, I have been a fan of anime. I love anime and I live for it. Even though many people say anime is for kids, I still love it. It doesn’t make me weird; that’s who I am. It is one of the many things that makes me unique. Our preferences and values define who we are. Music is a great example of this subject. When it comes to music, we have different tastes, different opinions on certain songs, and different opinions on artists. One person can claim that a singer is one of the best in the world, while another might say they are the worst. I’ve heard many people praise Davido, the famous Nigerian singer for being the best in Nigeria, while others claim he doesn’t come close to the position, saying his voice sounds like a frog. Our diversity is not only limited to music, it is the same reason @b0s thinks Messi is the greatest footballer of all time.

There’s no doubt that music affects us differently. A song might evoke strong emotions in people, while it does nothing to others. I am not of a different school of thought that music is food for the soul. The importance of music in our lives cannot be overemphasized. Not only does it inspire and motivate us, but it also has the magical powers to evoke and manipulate emotions. Interestingly, there are different songs for different purposes; there are songs that resonate with you when you are sad, songs that make you happy, and songs that make you lose your demureness and start going freaky. Today’s edition of the Hive learner's weekly prompts asks what our favorite music is. How does listening to your favorite music affect you?

As I mentioned above, as humans, we have different tastes when it comes to music. For many, music is therapeutic. I have friends who tell me that whenever they are sad and are at their lowest, music comes through for them. All they have to do is lock themselves up in a room and play good music. They magically feel better after listening to music. Again, I am not disputing the fact that music is therapeutic, but it just doesn’t work for me. At first, I thought I was broken and needed fixing because out of all my friends, I am probably the only person who doesn’t find music therapeutic. Whenever I am sad, what makes me feel better is sleep, and maybe sometimes, anime, but sleep works better. All I need to do is force myself to sleep, wander off, and let my imagination do its work, and when I wake up, I feel better. I have tried to use music as a form of therapy, but it didn’t work. When the song I chose was done playing (about 3 times), and nothing worked, I turned off my phone and slept.

However, the fact that I don’t find music therapeutic doesn’t mean that it doesn’t affect me in any way. I have realized that I enjoy music better when I’m in a happy mood. To put it better, music adds to my happiness. It makes me happy when I’m already happy. On days when I’m happy and I’m in a hyper mood, I find myself dancing to songs. I find it funny that whenever I am in this mood, I don’t dance to songs I understand. I enjoy dancing to South African Amapianos. There’s something spectacular about the language and rhythm.

I don’t have a favorite music. My taste changes from time to time. If you asked me this question two years ago, I’m pretty sure I’d boldly say anything Juice Wrld. I used to be a big fan of Juice Wrld (I still am), playing his music every day. Man of the Year was always on repeat for hours. Out of the blue, I stopped listening to Juice Wrld songs like I used to. I wouldn’t say I grew out of love for his songs, my taste in music changed. One thing I have noticed about myself is that my taste in things changes from time to time. For example, in 2020, I spent the lockdown reading Greek Myths and books about politics, and all of a sudden, my taste drifted to another genre. Similarly, my taste in music shifts from time to time. Recently, I have been enjoying Nigerian hip-hop songs.

My favorite song at the time is “Joy is Coming” by Khafi, a Nigerian singer. This song has been on repeat for about 2 days now. I know I’ll get tired of it in a matter of time, but for now, it is my favorite.
