The role of competency in our musical life is very important and can't be overemphasized. Music encompasses a lot of things and is not just about singing or writing or playing one instrument or other. We are living in a time where many just concentrate on singing without paying attention to other significant aspects of music. In life, when you want to outshine your contemporaries something special and outstanding must be done in order to bring out the variance or the leverage factor.
I have lived to see so many people having good passion about music but never want to build good capability or proficiency in what they do. When you are occupied with many task, it may be difficult to sustain or build proficiency in one area. I want to specially appreciate the entire management of this beautiful community for bringing such an important theme of discussion in this episode of the initiative. To me it's timely because it will address the present challenge we have found ourselves in music today.
I noticed that many don't last in music today because the role of competency is neglected and zero attention is given to it. Generally competency is needed in all facets of life. This is what gives an individual competitive advantage over others. This also can be liked to the place of value added services in the life of an individual. Competency is very important. Competency entails being skillful, full of capacity, being proficient or being loaded with skill in a particular task or field of endeavour. Competency helps to mould an individual and present such person sought after even amongst his equals. What makes others last and have a sustained reputation lies within the border of competency. Show me a competent individual and I will show you an individual that has highly respected reputation.
Apart from your ability to sing or play instruments add proficiency. Whenever you are called you deliver. Competency in music makes one to be ready at anytime to deliver. Let me quickly share a brief story about a musician I look up to in life how he was able to maintain his gift or called for long time now. His name is Dr panam Percy Paul. It's like a household name presently in the shores of Jos plateau State. He's into music for more than forty years now and his songs still wax everywhere. I could remember one of the songs he released in 1990s he sings and plays the song till date. Today, he has a music school that has trained a lot of music inclined persons. He has different master degrees in music as well Phd.
The fact that you play instruments or sing doesn't mean that you shouldn't build proficiency in music. Some people don't even want to go to music school to perfect skills neither even study music. Hmmm how would you go far? I was shocked when I saw Dr Panam Percy Paul in a conference while he was about to preach, the sound system started misbehaving. Surprisingly from the stage where he was standing, he told the engineers to reduce the something and suddenly the unnecessary noise ceased. Wow this this the power of competency being demonstrated.
Competency can be build in singing, sound engineering,song composition, or any other music inclined where. The role of competency in music can't just be exhausted. Please add value to your self and don't stop learning. See you at the top.
