A Call for a Community Vote on AI-Enhanced (Artificial Intelligence) Content Curation in the FreeCompliments Community

in voilk •  5 months ago

One of the founding and guiding principles of the FreeCompliments Community is the freedom to express whatever content you like without fear of suppression. It is something that I, as the founder, hold very dear to heart, having seen the effects of suppression on my family members before they came to the United States.

Of course, this is a broad topic which opens up many different schools of thought and criticisms. On Web 3.0, with Hive's monetization model, this becomes even more complicated.

It was a few months ago that we decided, as a community, to longer reward or curate content which was copied directly from another source, even if it was fully sourced; however, we permitted the freedom to have people continue posting such content in the community.

    Our Policy on Plagiarism

We 100% will not support direct plagiarism of content. If you copy someone's work, whether it be text, images, art, etc., it must come with a source. If you do not do this, then you are effectively earning money off of someone else's work without providing them credit, which is equivalent to theft, and theft is illegal. This will not be tolerated and will not be curated.

We've already dealt with a case of plagiarism. Our approach was one of teaching and forgiveness. We strongly believe that it is possible for someone to make changes to their behavior without resorting to harsh measures and processes to redeem themselves. I believe that the ability to forgive someone is a virtue, as it is not easy to do and requires genuine effort - but that it can also have lasting positive effects if implemented with proper teaching.

The Usage of AI for Enhancement of Writing

Now, another interesting topic has come up – the prospect of using artificial intelligence in writing. It’s natural that with the continued development of AI, some people are going to use the technology to either write complete articles on their behalf, while others will use it to enhance or fix their writing. There’s a broad range of use cases for AI in writing.

I’ve contacted the owner of the HSBI program (@josephsavage) for his thoughts on rewarding HSBI for content that includes AI, and he stated that he approves of the usage of HSBI for most AI-generated content. Of course, this being his program, I will respect his decision.

An Analysis of the Situation (With My Own Bias)

From one extreme point of view, people can say that using AI to write out a topic is fair game because they’re thinking of a topic or question to pose to AI, and that portion is still original; additionally, no other human entity produced this work and thus it is not stolen; thus, it should still count as their work.

From the other extreme point of view, the usage of AI to any degree makes the work not entirely original, and thus should no longer count as an individual’s unique work. There’s also the argument that minimal work is put into using AI for content generation; this may be valid in cases where AI is “obvious,” although it is becoming harder to detect.

My personal point of view is that it is OK to use AI to enhance writing to a degree; particularly, in terms of translation between languages, fixing grammar and spelling, and assisting with word choice. The creation of artwork through AI should also be permitted, provided that the author gives us some context about their idea / prompt. As long as the usage of AI is specified at the beginning or end of a piece of writing or art, it’s fair game and deserves rewards/curation.

    Continuation of HSBI Rewards

As per the wishes of the founder of HSBI, we’ll continue rewarding HSBI to those who post AI_enhanced and generated content.

    Our Choices - 6 Questions

Thus, I would like to put this concept to a community vote. We will address various levels of AI usage.

If you agree, please upvote or respond with "yes" or "agree." If you disagree, please downvote or respond with "no" or "disagree." Vote percentages will not be taken into consideration, so whether you want to use 0.1% or 100% is up to you - the vote will be identical.

    1. The first question: should we allow content fully and obviously generated by AI to be posted in the FreeCompliments Community without author attribution of AI usage (regardless or rewards or curation)?

    2. The second question: if we allow this content within the community, should we curate it (with minimal votes from our curation account and curation trail)?

    3. The third question: should we allow content fully and obviously generated by AI to be posted in the FreeCompliments Community, provided the author is honest about AI usage (regardless or rewards or curation)?

    4. The fourth question: if we allow this content within the community, should we curate it (with minimal or regular votes from our curation account and curation trail)?

    5. The fifth question: should we allow content enhanced by AI, inclusive of some content creation, to be posted in the FreeCompliments Community (regardless or rewards or curation)?

    6. The sixth question: if we allow this content within the community, should we curate it (with minimal or regular votes from our curation account and curation trail)?

    7. The seventh question: should we allow content enhanced by AI, only for the purpose of fixing grammar/spelling or for translation, to be posted in the FreeCompliments Community (regardless or rewards or curation)?

    8. The eighth question: if we allow this content within the community, should we curate it (with minimal or regular votes from our curation account and curation trail)?

These six questions will determine our next steps, and the freedom with which we permit posting within the community. My personal votes will align with what I have said previously (1: yes, 2: no, 3: yes, 4: yes, 5: yes, 6: yes, 7: yes, 8: yes), and I will vote as a regular member, meaning my votes will be worth the same as everyone else's votes. I strongly encourage you to think about the information presented here and make your own decision. The more votes we receive, the better an idea we will have of what the community prefers.

    Conclusion

We have some interesting decisions to make regarding how we’re going to curate AI-enhanced posts from now on. Your voice and opinion is very important and does matter, so I hope that you’ll participate in directing this community towards its best path. Thank you in advance for your participation!
