In one of the schools in Nigeria, the session ended in a grand style that made me derive a great lesson from the occasion. It was the “school’s cultural day” – an event where all students wore different attires to represent a tribe, nation, or country.
During the event, I learned a new strategy derived from the educational system to enhance learning experiences for children, this strategy is what I will employ for my kids when I have one. One of the approaches I learned was “visual learning,” where children absorb information more effectively through what they see. This strategy was vividly exemplified during the cultural day event I attended.
The school's cultural day was a vibrant celebration where students were encouraged to dress up in attire representing various countries around the world. What got my attention the most was how the children embraced and embodied the essence of each culture through their attire. From traditional Egyptian wear to South African attires, every outfit served as a visual avenue into the customs, traditions, and heritage of different nations.
During the event, I met some student and had a discussion with them, they were fascinated and eager to share their newfound knowledge about different countries. Through what they wore, the visual cue provided by their attire was able to not only recognize but also understand and appreciate the unique characteristics of each culture.
From what I saw, it will be difficult for them to forget it in a hurry; this made me understand the power of visual learning in facilitating comprehension and retention among children. Unlike what is taught and heard in class, the practical aspect which is visuals is processed more rapidly and effectively by the brain compared to the others. By immersing themselves in visual representations of diverse cultures, children can grasp complex concepts more readily and develop a broader worldview.
Moreover, cultural immersion through visual learning builds a cross-cultural understanding among children. By experiencing the diversity of traditions of different tribes, they learn to celebrate differences and cultivate respect for people from all walks of life. This, in turn, cultivates a more inclusive and harmonious learning environment, preparing children to thrive in society.
In conclusion, the cultural day event at the school exemplified how children learn faster and more effectively through visual immersion. By wearing these attires representing different countries, students not only absorbed knowledge but also developed empathy and cross-cultural understanding. As educators, embracing visual learning methodologies can pave the way for a more engaging and enriching educational experience for all children.
