Miraculous island

I came to the island of Tinos without many expectations but it kept surprising me, in the most pleasant and unexpected way. From the beach bar that looked like an art installation, to the village that seemed to belong in another world and all the mesmerising beaches and landscapes in between, I kept wondering why I haven't heard something more about this miraculous island before!

Of course I know the answer to my question and the key word is "miraculous". Tinos is mostly known as a place of pilgrimage for the Greek Orthodox Christians, a religious destination to honour an icon that is considered miraculous and a sacred location. So most of the information I had heard about it were religion orientated, as the other qualities of the island are usually overlooked.

What a shame, I might add, as there are so many more things to see and enjoy on it!

Today I am showing you "Pirgos", the biggest village on the island and one of the most scenic spots of the Aegean sea!

One other thing that I had heard about Tinos, is that it produces excellent marble, famous all over the country. So the "museum of marble crafts" wasn't such a big surprise although the existence of such a museum was a surprise by itself :)

Of course I entered and wandered among old tools, pieces of marble and informational videos. Museums may be often very interesting but they are always, always air-conditioned!

And in a hot summer day, spending some time in a cool environment doesn't hurt :)

I took those pictures on 11/07/2012, when I was working as a photographer for a travel magazine. A job that allowed me to travel all over Greece and see all the places I ever wanted to see and some more that I never imagined I would be interested in (but I enjoyed them anyway).

I am linking below my previous posts about that same trip, in case you missed them and you want to take a look!
