Flying around "Schrattenstein", a castle ruin from 13th century

The ruin of Schrattenstein Castle is situated on a ridge with a beautiful view to Hohe Wand and Schneeberg. The structure was abandoned hundreds of years ago thus the level of erosion is severe. Nevertheless it's always worth a hike because the site and its surrounding is just beautiful.

Schrattenstein Castle's history dates back to 1182 under Margrave Otakar IV of Styria. Initially owned by the Lords of Schrattenstein, it passed through various hands, including Rudolf I of Habsburg and Frederick of Hohenzollern. By the early 14th century it became a fiefdom of the Margraves of Brandenburg and the Burgraves of Nuremberg. Peter von Ebersdorf acquired the castle in 1364, followed by expansions and changes of ownership. By 1542, it was already in ruins and served as a refuge during conflicts. Abandoned due to damages from wars, notably with the Hungarians under Matthias Corvinus in the late 16th century, it retained some habitation until the 16th century. The city of Vienna acquired the ruins in 1937, preserving its historical significance under municipal ownership.
