The Path To A Tolerant World

They say as we grow, we must learn to be tolerant of each other. Why do you think this has been said or is being preached by most people in society? The society in which we live in this days is filled with a lot of different people, who have different cultural beliefs, come from different backgrounds and are people who have different styles of training.

On one side of the coin I grew up in the northern part of the country and then on the other side I grew up in the southern part of the country. I have experienced both cultures and this is what I’ve got to say.

First of all the people in the southern part of my country have always looked down on the people in the northern part of my country. Yes, this is a fact that a lot of people try to deny daily simply because some people believe that it’s just something which has been said by people and is not actually true. For someone who has seen both cultures first-hand, I say it’s true. There have been situations where someone will try to tell me to hide the fact that I am a northerner, this is simply because he or she feels like I might not be granted access to what I asked for if that person finds out I am a northerner.

The thing is, there has been a bad name that people of the north have been given and sincerely you’ll never know or hear of it if you haven’t sat or spoken with someone who has been in the southern part of the country all his life. At times I feel like the people of the north are more tolerable than the people of the south.

One thing people will never understand about how people of the north behave is that the actions we portray towards them are mostly are reflection of the comments that they pass or the way they look at us. They sometimes make comments which seem like people of the north are not humans at all.

One thing that I’ll always be thankful for is that I am a northerner and I will always be proud of it. One thing is that, even though I sometimes do feel the harsh treatment of people especially when they find out you are a northerner I still don’t care. I’ve grown up to not actually be moved by the comments that they make about my culture, tribe and religion.

Sometimes some people are surprised to even hear that I am a Muslim simply because they say I don’t look like one. In their definition, a Muslim should look like a Northerner and once you don’t look like a Northerner then it means you are not Muslim.

Am not going to sit here and falter or slander them throughout on this post. Yes, they have their faults but we also have our faults. From both sides, we are not both culturally tolerant of each other which will disturb the pace of the country till the earth comes to an end. I feel like simply because of the way that they treat us we take us as a bypass to treat them back poorly.

So at the end of the day, I feel like we don’t tolerate and respect each other enough due to cultural differences. Why would I want to reciprocate respect to someone who doesn’t respect me either? One thing that we can’t deny is that cultural differences will always be a thing and we must learn to live with it cause that is how we were created.
