The goal number 6 of the United Nations (UN) sustainable development goal (SDG) is clean water and sanitation. Provision of clean, safe, healthy and affordable water has been a major challenge especially in third world countries and developing nations. The more reason why diseases which are water borne are still prevalent in these areas because of the low quality of water been taken in.
In order to achieve a safe, good quality and affordable water for all, a concise effort which should be collaborative is needed. These efforts is multifaceted where both the citizens and the government works hand-in-hand to achieve a great success. For example, one of the criteria that was set before settling in my current apartment is that of a quality water supply. Below are some of the approaches that i believed if followed will help attain
some remarkable success:
• Government prioritizing the health and well being of the citizens.
It's highly regrettable to note that the lackadaisical attitude of the government of some nations towards the provision of quality water supply is due to the non-priority of the citizens health concerns. As water is indispensable and poor quality increases disease burden of a nation, the government needs to wake up to this responsibility and in some cases declare a state of emergency due to the urgency involved.
• Provision of more boreholes and improved water supply:
Boreholes should be provided at the community base to help water supply and provision of quality water. The government can leverage on solar energy to power such facility especially in countries with poor electricity supply. Also, there should be improved water supply by the government through repair of damaged water pipes, renovation of abandoned/spoilt water works, employing more staffs with good technical know-how etc.
• Pumped wells and good water storage in houses:
I will encourage that each house have a pumping machine attached to the wells dug and the well been well covered and undergo routine water purification using appropriate/approved chemical substance. Also, the storex/water reservoirs in the house should be routinely cleaned as this prevents clogging and accumulation of particles which can be of negative impart to the body. For as many that can afford boreholes, this will be one of the best strategy for a safe, clean, healthier water supply.
• The need for routine water purification in rural areas
There will be need for a routine water purification most especially in rural areas by the approved government agencies. The use of Alums, water guards and other household water purification substances will be helpful most especially after a successful awareness and orientation in these areas.
• Enforcement of existing regulations on water production to achieve good standardisation
Poor law enforcement has been a major challenge in countries with poor water supply. The packaged water manufacturers should be visited and certified with routine checks to avoid breach in standard. Also, citizens should report to the appropriate authorities in case of breach or negligence.
• Public awareness and sensitization on the need for quality, clean and affordable water
One of the best strategy is to create a massive public awareness both in rural and urban areas. The public should be made to know the health implications of using water of low quality. The public should be made to know their involvement and roles to achieve this sustainable development goal.
