We're back with more of our home cooking! If you're unfamiliar with this series, it's where I showcase some of the food we've been making at home since we've been cooking a lot nowadays! Both because it's cheaper and also healthier to cook for yourself compared to eating out. While I usually stick to the usual recipes I do like to try new ones once in a while and figured I'd share the new ones I've tried.
Every time we travel we always visit the grocery store overseas to try their local snacks and drinks and also take some goofy photos in the aisles like this:
But since I'm cooking a lot more these days, I'm always on the lookout for new sauces and spices to try as well, and on our recent trip to Korea we also bought this Korean version of Japanese curry sauce that they had:
If I recall they had a few different spice levels but since Japanese curry is quite mild we went for a Medium to try.
The instructions on the back are all in Korean but here it is roughly translated:
I guess a lot of people would just microwave it and pour it over rice but I wanted to add some vegetables into the curry and cook it together.
Here are the ingredients I used:
- 1 pack of spinach
- 2 carrots
- 1 large onion
- 2 or 3 potatoes
- 3 cups rice
Unfortunately I didn't take a picture of the ingredients, but I think I made white rice to go with this since we were going to have plenty of vegetables already.
Step 1: Chop all the vegetables.
I cut the carrots and onions into strips and cubes the potatoes.
Step 2: In a pot of boiling water, pour in the carrots, potatoes and onions since those will take the longest to cook.
Step 3: Once they're quite soft, put in the spinach.
Step 4: Once all the veggies are cooked, drain the pot and set it aside.
So the pack is actually quite small and definitely made for just one person, but we thought it'd be more concentrated and needed to some water so it could maybe be 2 servings. I think we got cheated by the numbers in the corner of the box indicating 3 or 2 but I think that meant 3 minutes in the pot, or 2 minutes in the microwave.
It's clearly meant to be poured over a single serving of rice as the packet indicates, but it was too late now. We figured we'd just make it anyway.
Step 5: Pour the curry sauce into the pot.
It was definitely too little sauce for how much veggies we cooked. There was even some meat, potatoes and carrots in the curry itself as well.
Step 6: Pour the veggies back into the pot and mix with the curry.
It was already the right consistency so we didn't want to add water to it lest we dilute it too much, so we did the best we could and at least tried to coat all the vegetables in the curry. But it was clear it was way too much for how little sauce there was.
Then it was time to serve! We poured the vegetables and curry on top of our rice.
It was actually still really tasty regardless! There was just a lot more ingredients than was intended but it was still good nonetheless. All the veggies were nice and tender and there was a slight sweetness to the curry sauce. It tasted like generic Japanese curry though so nothing too special but it was still yummy! At least next time we'll know to buy 2 packets of this kind of curry if we ever make it again.
