Message From Blue Heron
We heard a very rare sound while taking a break outside in our yard with my dog and husband yesterday. Curious about the source of that beautiful call, we looked up and spotted a majestic blue heron soaring above us. To our surprise, another heron quickly joined it, and together they seemed to dance in circles high in the sky. It was a mesmerizing sight, and even our dog seemed joyful as we all watched.
I’ve always loved herons. Though I couldn’t capture a photo this time, I once took some stunning pictures of herons when I lived in the Kanto area of Japan. During the migratory season, the city was filled with these graceful birds. Living close to the ocean must have drawn them to the area. It was amazing to spot herons even during simple errands like shopping.
After we returned indoors, we looked up the significance of seeing herons. People have long believed that when a great blue heron appears, it means the gods have come to visit the village. My husband and I often talk about big birds like eagles, owls, Japanese cranes, and herons as ancient gods delivering messages from the sky. The great blue heron is said to hold deep spiritual power, bringing peace and stability. It is also a symbol of psychic ability and communication with the Divine.
I cherish those moments when large birds circle above my head. It feels like they are delivering a message, especially during their migration to warmer places. Their wingspan is so vast that their shadows startled me, but the experience filled me with excitement. The sound of their wings as they take flight is something I find exhilarating.
Watching the movie The Boy and the Heron by Hayao Miyazaki reminded me of the herons I used to see in Japan. Here in Canada, they tend to stay away from people, so seeing them circle above us the other day was especially thrilling. I hope I get to see them again next year.

青サギからのメッセージ
きのう、休憩がてら主人と犬といっしょに庭に出ると、空から珍しい音が聞こえてきました。そのきれいな鳴き声が気になって声がする方向を見上げてみると、わたしたちの真上に美しい青サギが飛んでいました。驚いたことに、さらにもう一匹の青サギが飛んできて旋回しはじめました。しばらくボーッと２匹のサギがぐるぐる飛び回る姿を見上げてしまうほど、美しくて楽しい時間でした。
わたしはサギが好きです。今回は写真を撮ることができなかったので、昔関東に住んでいた時に撮影した写真を載せたいと思います。渡り鳥の時期になると、街中にたくさんの美しい鳥たちが現れました。海の近くに住んでいたので、渡り鳥に出会う機会が多かったのだと思います。買い物に出かける途中にこんな風景が日常にあったのがとても素晴らしかったです。
庭から家の中に戻って、さっそく青サギを見る意味を調べてみました。昔の人々は村に青サギが訪れると、神様からのメッセージだと考えていたそうです。やっぱり！鷲、ふくろう、丹頂鶴やサギのような大きな鳥は神様のような存在で、空からくるメッセンジャーだという話をよく主人としています。青サギは深遠でスピリチュアルな力を秘めていて、平和と安定を運んでくるそうです。さらに、青サギは超自然的な能力と神との交流を表す象徴でもあるとのことです。
大きな鳥が頭上で円を描いて飛んでいるときはなんとも言えない幸福な時間です。実にメッセージを運んできてくれている感じがしますし、渡り鳥があたたかい地域に向かう前に立ち寄ってくれることが特別に感じます。大きな翼を羽ばたいた時に感じる影に少し驚きますが、同時にワクワクもします。飛び立つ時のバタバタという翼の音も格別です。
宮崎駿監督の映画、君たちはどう生きるかを観たとき、関東で見たサギたちのことを思い出しました。ここカナダでは、野生の鳥たちが人間の生活領域に日本の鳥たちほど近づいてくることはかなり珍しいです。ですから、今回のように鳥がかなり近くの頭上でしばらく旋回していたことはとても珍しい瞬間でした。また来年見たいです。
