Here in Calgary, we get several hailstorms throughout the summer months. It seems to come with little warning; it could be raining, then you hear the rain picking up in tempo, and then you hear it almost sound like something is crashing down. Looking outside, you'll see the rain turn thick and little pelts start hammering down. If you are inside somewhere with a metal roof, it can sound like the ceiling is being pelted with thousands of little pebbles. The hail stones can vary in size, from peas to almost the size of a quarter, or in the extreme case, golf ball sized. It can be quite destructive to people's homes and cars, which is unfortunate. Typically this will last for 5 to 10 minutes, then it just stops, sometimes back to light rain, sometimes to almost no rain at all, as if the sky had nothing more to hurl down.
