Many years ago, i came across this: "Music, a food for the soul" and i began to wonder what this really mean. Over a decade now, by the privilege i had to be in music as an instrumentalist (a keyboardist in specific) and as a music instructor, i have found out the probable answer to the question asked above even as it played out in many areas or facets of life. Firstly, the right understanding of food will be necessary to answer this question because to a hungry man, food is the most suitable answer at that moment while for a thirsty person, water is the most appropriate. This means that there is something appropriate for each moment and time, therefore it can be said that the soul of man which involves his emotions, intellects, willpower are all influenced by music i.e. music has a great impact on the soul.
In addition, it should be noted that music can be in the vocal or instrumentation form depending on individuals choice or preference. The beautiful part of this is that when these two forms are combined together, it sounds pleasant to the hearers. The soul of we humans though invisible but has a great affinity and connection to our senses (sight, hearing, taste, seeing and feelings) and this is where the answer to this question lies. The answer to this question is that, MUSIC IS THE FOOD FOR THE SOUL and is for these following reasons:

a) Music deals with sounds most especially beautiful sounds either from the vocals or musical instruments, therefore, these beautiful sounds when heared by humans has a soothing or calming effect on the soul which in this sense is the most appropriate especially for an agigated soul. For example, imagine an annoyed or angry individual who need to cool of listening to his favourite musical piece.
b) For a weary, sad or sick soul, music has this ability to cheer, brighten up that soul especially when the person listen and sees the visual display of his/her most loved music piece, artiste or display. For example, the healing that the smile or happiness a musical piece can bring to an ailing soul is unquantifiable.
c) Music appeals to the intellectualism/will power of humans and this in result brings about various effects. For example, in sports why do we have supporters clubs or why do fans sing the national/native/clubside songs to cheer the players to victory? Why do we use talking drum, gongs etc in the olden days as a sign of impending danger or wars? Why do we learn rhymes, songs and most educational/valuable things as children using musical means? Why do we sing lullaby for babies?

In all, it can be seen that music (beautiful combination of sounds which is either voices or musical instrumentation to form melodies) as it differs from noise (unpleasant, displeasing sounds) is truly the food (appropriate) for the soul as it influences our emotions, intellects, willpower by its calming, exciting, attractive or compelling ability.
