Cartacuba: The Mystery of Its Eyes

in voilk •  3 months ago

One of Cuba's most iconic birds because of its diminutive size and colors is the Cartacuba or Todus Multicolor. This endemic jewel of the island can be observed in different ecosystems, from plains to mountainous areas.

As a nature photographer I am always attentive to details, and this species has always caught my attention because of the color of its eyes. I have had the opportunity to travel to many places in Cuba and I have photographed them, realizing that in the western zone dark eyes prevail, while in the eastern region of the country blue eyes prevail. This phenomenon has given rise to many theories ranging from genetics to environmental influence. Below I wanted to share with the community some of the photographs I have taken of this species throughout the island and I hope you enjoy them.
