Welcome to Prague, the Czech Republic, the heart of Europe. Something is always happening here. Is there little going on here, given that we are a capital city of one and a half million people? Maybe, but I can always find something to do here.
This weekend, new art installations appeared on the facade of the Máj (May) department store.
The work depicts a British World War II Spitfire fighter in 1:1 scale. But with butterfly wings. Why?
The author is David Černý (*1967), a well-known Prague artist and provocateur. He has probably created the most art objects of any artist living in Prague.
This butterfly has its wings almost pressed together.
But this butterfly has its wings spread. Will butterflies move their wings? David also creates moving installations.
This work of art caused a great response. There is a debate as to whether it is appropriate or not at this location. It is located on a building that has been declared a Cultural Monument of the Czech Republic. This means that its appearance is protected. It is located almost in the centre of the city, in a touristic area. Thousands and thousands of people pass through here every day.
I had no opinion of the work until I saw it. I'm not an architect, I'm not an art historian, I'm not an artist. But I kind of like the thing. And it won't be difficult to dismantle again if necessary.
I'm not an ardent supporter of David Cerny. But the quality of art is usually determined by time. You just have to wait.

Vítejte v Praze, v České republice, v srdci Evropy. Pořád se tu něco děje. Děje se tady toho málo vzhledem k tomu, že jsme jeden a půl milionové hlavní město? Možná, ale já si tu pro sebe něco vždycky najdu.

Autorem je díla David Černý (*1967), známý pražský umělec a provokatér. Vytvořil v Praze pravděpodobně nejvíce uměleckých objektů ze všech žijících umělců.
Jeden motýl má křídla téměř přitisknutá k sobě. Druhý je má roztažená. Budou motýli svými křídly hýbat? David vytváří také pohyblivé instalace...
Tohle umělecké dílo vyvolalo velký ohlas. Vede se diskuse, zda je na tomto místě vhodné, nebo ne. Je umístěné na objektu, který je vyhlášen Kulturní památkou České republiky. To znamená, že jeho vzhled je chráněný. Nachází se skoro ve středu města, v turisticky vyhledávané oblasti. Denně tudy proudí tisíce a tisíce lidí.
Dokud jsem dílo neviděl, neměl jsem na něj žádný názor. Nejsem architekt, nejsem historik umění, nejsem umělec. Ale docela se mi to líbí. A nebude těžké ji v případě potřeby znovu rozebrat.
Nejsem horlivým příznivcem Davida Černého. Ale kvalitu umění obvykle určuje čas. Takže počkáme a uvidíme.
A na chodníku se předělává dlažba. Taky tam vznikají vyskládané siluety letadel. Ale je to natolik nehotové, že to není není lze pořádně rozeznat.
