¿Por qué somos escritores? (ESP/ENG)

Muchas veces nos sentamos frente a la pantalla de la computadora o tomamos el lápiz y el papel con la cabeza llena de ideas, de sueños, de personajes y vivencias que tal vez son ajenas pero se vuelven nuestras a través del simple hecho de contarlas, y luego se vuelve tu historia o la de él o quizá la de ella porque cualquier lector puede sentirse identificado, nos volvemos semidioses al crear un universo completo en el que coexisten héroes y villanos y donde tenemos el poder absoluto de decidir hasta quien vive y quien muere, a veces le regalamos a nuestros personajes un poquito de nuestras vidas, pero enriquecemos la historia mediante el infalible recurso de la hipérbole.

Unas veces somos padres orgullosos de nuestros hijos y soñamos con el día en que salgan al mundo a demostrar porqué y para qué fueron creados, y en otras los miramos con lástima al saber que solo nosotros y unos cuantos conocen de su existencia, porque nuestros hijos de tinta y papel (en el caso de los que lograron nacer) o los que aún permanecen en la memoria de la computadora, muchas veces se convierten en tormento y frustración, pero otras veces en esperanza y satisfacción.

Pocos conocen lo que se esconde detrás de cada historia, novela o relato, las horas de investigación, de trabajo o de insomnio que el escritor invirtió en su obra, casi nadie piensa en ello cuando cierra un libro luego de leerlo, tampoco piensa en lo mucho que tal vez costó que ese hijo de tinta y papel se concretara y finalmente llegara a este mundo a cumplir su importante misión.

Las historias nacen cada día, constantemente hay un semidios creando un universo paralelo al suyo en el que coexistirán infinidades de personajes y situaciones, pero pocos, muy pocos, se convertirán en los anhelados hijos de tinta y papel con el que sueña cada creador, muchas veces estos hijos no llegan a concretarse por falta de dinero u oportunidades porque en este mundo real en el que vivimos, los creadores necesitan mucho más que talento y una buena imaginación.

Algunos incluso hasta llegan a renunciar a sus sueños e ilusiones, a sus historias fantásticas, a sus personajes y los múltiples mundos que concibe su fértil imaginación, en aras de hacer algo "productivo" que se traduce en trabajar para comer, comer para vivir y finalmente vivir para trabajar, pero no es el trabajo el problema, sino el hecho en si de trabajar en un ambiente que no es el propio, un alma creativa morirá de a poco en un espacio donde se ve forzada a realizar actividades ajenas a su naturaleza, su mente constantemente volará en busca de un escape que no puede obtener porque la vida, la sociedad, los convencionalismos o lo que sea, dijeron que estar allí es lo que necesita, que es lo más sensato porque escribir solo lo mantendrá con los zapatos rotos y el estómago vacío, y es entonces cuando surge la gran pregunta ¿Por qué escribimos los escritores amateurs? ¿Por qué somos escritores? Si posiblemente ni siquiera podremos publicar nuestras obras, y en caso de lograrlo tal vez ni siquiera se vendan.

La respuesta la encontré en Gabriel García Márquez, autor de la celebre novela El Coronel no tiene quien le escriba, Amor en tiempos de cólera, Crónicas de una muerte anunciada, entre otras obras, quien no alcanzó reconocimiento sino cerca de los 40 años con Cien Años de Soledad, su obra más célebre. Ese mismo autor brillante de imaginación inagotable que incluso llegó a ganar el Nobel de literatura y estaba destinado a ser abogado, fue alguna vez también un escritor amateur, con ilusiones despedazadas, con frustraciones, con miedos e incertidumbres, que moría de a poco en trabajos que odiaba, pero renacía más tarde en la tinta con esta convicción que más tarde renovaría las esperanzas de los que como él, soñamos en grande.

«Se es escritor, simplemente, como se es judío o negro. El éxito es alentador, el favor de los lectores es estimulante, pero ésas son ganancias suplementarias, porque un buen escritor seguirá escribiendo de todas maneras, aún y con los zapatos rotos y aunque sus libros no se vendan»

Que Dios los bendiga y que mantenga fértil su imaginación para continuar regalando ese arte que viene de la mente, el alma y el corazón, no somos escritores por casualidad o porque así lo determinen las estadísticas de libros vendidos, la cantidad de seguidores o las opiniones ajenas, lo somos porque lo llevamos en la sangre y porque está en nuestro destino, y además es oprque imposible dejar de serlo.

Many times we sit in front of the computer screen or pick up a pencil and paper with our heads full of ideas, dreams, characters and experiences, which may be alien but become ours through the simple act of telling them, and then it becomes your story or his or maybe hers because any reader can identify with it, we become demigods by creating a complete universe in which heroes and villains coexist and where we have the absolute power to decide who lives and who dies, sometimes we give our characters a little bit of our lives, but we enrich the story through the infallible resource of hyperbole.

Sometimes we are proud parents of our children and dream of the day when they will go out into the world to show why and for what they were created, and at other times we look at them with pity knowing that only we and a few others know of their existence, because our children of ink and paper (in the case of those who managed to be born) or those who still remain in the memory of the computer, often become torment and frustration, but at other times hope and satisfaction.

Few know what is hidden behind each story, novel or tale, the hours of research, work or sleeplessness that the writer invested in his/her work, almost nobody thinks about it when they close a book after reading it, nor do they think about how much it may have cost for that child of ink and paper to come to fruition and finally arrive in this world to fulfil its important mission.

Stories are born every day, there is constantly a demigod creating a parallel universe to his own in which infinite characters and situations coexist, but few, very few, will become the longed-for children of ink and paper that every creator dreams of. Often these children do not come to fruition for lack of money or opportunities because in this real world in which we live, creators need much more than talent and a good imagination.

Some even go so far as to renounce their dreams and illusions, their fantastic stories, their characters and the multiple worlds conceived by their fertile imagination, for the sake of doing something "productive" which translates into working to eat, eating to live and finally living to work, but it is not the work that is the problem, but the fact itself of working in an environment that is not one's own, a creative soul will die little by little in a space where it is forced to perform activities alien to its nature, his/her mind will constantly fly in search of an escape that he/she cannot obtain because life, society, conventionalisms or whatever, said that being there is what he/she needs, that it is the most sensible thing to do because writing will only keep him/her with broken shoes and an empty stomach, and it is then when the big question arises: Why do we amateur writers write? Why are we writers? We may not even be able to publish our work, and if we do, it may not even sell.

I found the answer in Gabriel García Márquez, author of the famous novel El Coronel (The Colonel has no one to write to him) no tiene quien le escriba, Amor en tiempos de cólera (Love in times of cholera), Crónicas de una muerte anunciada (Chronicles of a death foretold), among other works, who only achieved recognition at the age of 40 with Cien Años de Soledad (One Hundred Years of Solitude), his most famous work. That same brilliant author of inexhaustible imagination who even went on to win the Nobel Prize for literature and was destined to become a lawyer, was once also an amateur writer, with shattered illusions, frustrations, fears and uncertainties, who died little by little in jobs he hated, but was later reborn in ink with this conviction that would later renew the hopes of those of us who, like him, dream big.

"You are a writer, just as you are a Jew or a black. Success is encouraging, the favour of readers is stimulating, but those are supplementary gains, because a good writer will keep writing anyway, even if his/her shoes are broken and his or her books don't sell.

May God bless you and keep your imagination fertile to continue giving away that art that comes from the mind, soul and heart, we are not writers by chance or because the statistics of books sold, the number of followers or the opinions of others determine it, we are writers because we carry it in our blood and because it is in our destiny, and it is also impossible to stop being one.
