Today in this post, I want to share a very special discovery that took me by surprise when I found myself near Poggibonsi, a municipality in Tuscany located in the province of Siena, for work-related reasons. Actually, a dear friend of mine had mentioned that there was a small archaeological park nearby, and we all know that Italy is full of such archaeological parks scattered throughout the peninsula. However, this one was quite unique because it included a recreated open-air museum where environments from the past were reconstructed in real scale, allowing tourists to immerse themselves in the daily life of bygone eras. I found it to be a fantastic testament to history, so fueled by curiosity, I decided to take a stroll through this archaeological park and capture some photos to share with you.
Essentially, in this archaeological park in Poggibonsi, a village from the 9th century AD has been reconstructed, placing us around the year 1000, roughly during the time of Charlemagne. It provides a firsthand immersive experience. What struck me the most was that the entrance to this archaeological park is completely free, except on weekends, and there's an option for guided tours with archaeologists who have been working on this site for several years. Unfortunately, I visited on a weekday, so there was practically no one around except for a person overseeing the archaeological site.
Apart from being passionate about art since childhood, I've always had a fascination with archaeology – those places where archaeological excavations take place have always intrigued me. I must say that this was a beautiful surprise. The work in this area began ten years ago to enhance and promote this part of Italy, aiming to educate children about its history and traditions. They mentioned that not many tourists visit, but school groups come here frequently on field trips.
In conclusion, with this post, I've shown that even in a region as rich as Tuscany, filled with charming villages and beautiful countryside, there's also a significant archaeological presence. While archaeology might be considered boring or uninteresting by some, fortunately, there are individuals who not only pursue it as a profession but also have a great passion for preserving and promoting these places.
