Time For A Little Rest - A Teacher's Story

    My Musings

As the Easter weekend approaches, I am looking forward to it with excitement because that will be ushering us to the second term holidays. I know it is going to be a great time for me to rest as a teacher, but that is not all I am going to be doing.

School holidays are good opportunities to plan and prepare for the upcoming term, and that is something I don't joke with.

Being an early childhood instructor, I love to think creatively when planning for my classes. That is why in my school, we create opportunities for the kids to learn outside the classroom.

One of the ways we engage our pupils in LOTC (that is, Learning Outside The Classroom) activities is by organising DIY creative projects. Another way is to organise an academic excursion for the kids and plan it to be fun-filled.

    Creative Art Projects
For the second term that is rounding off, our DIY creative projects focused on creating simple collage artworks, which we made by drawing, cutting and pasting different shapes.

For instance, we had a project for valentine's day. During that project which held on 14th February, 2024, we made Valentine's cards and flowers for the kids to give to their parents.

It is always a sweet thing watching the joy on the faces of these little boys and girls when they are trying their hands at drawing shapes on cardboard and cutting them out, then using water gum to paste the cut out shapes on a different coloured paper to make beautiful things they can take home.

    Academic Excursion

Our academic excursion for this term was tagged Train Ride Excursion, and of course we went to the Railway. The excursion was planned for last year but didn't hold because of poor responses from parents. So this term, we decided to go for it with the few kids that were ready.

    ☝☝☝
Two years ago when we took the kids to the airport for an excursion, we had a larger number of pupils that went. I guess, the economic hardship is telling on several families, making it difficult for more people to participate in such activities.

So, as we embark on this holiday, I will be working on and coming up with more projects for the kids to participate in when we resume. We always work to ensure that whatever we propose to embark on is pocket-friendly for the parents.

    Great Teamwork
There are already suggestions from some of the teachers in school, but we have to take some factors into consideration before taking the final decision.

For your information, I am not an artist but I try my best to stir up the creative abilities of these little ones in my care. Who knows the great heights these kids will get to when they have these gifts awakened in them? Perhaps they will one day remember that they once had a teacher in the person of my humble self, who helped to make their gifts come to life.

And again, our school is blessed to have teachers who work with all their heart because they understand the vision. Their contributions are making great impact in the lives of the children.
