En la actualidad el deporte venezolano parece estar pasando por una especie de "luna de miel" tanto en el fútbol como en el béisbol. Esto lo digo por lo que estamos viendo con la selección Sub-23 en el preolímpico que se está llevando aquí en Caracas en el estadio Brígido Iriarte y por lo que están haciendo los Tiburones de la Guaira en Miami en la Serie del Caribe tras haberse clasificado a la gran final a disputarse el día de hoy ante República Dominicana o mejor dicho Los Tigres del Licey. También tengo que mencionar, porque no creo que sea menos importante, que los chamos de la selección de Futsal se clasificaron al mundial a disputarse en Uzbekistán entre septiembre y octubre de este año.
At present, Venezuelan sports seem to be going through a kind of "honeymoon" in both soccer and baseball. Los Tiburones para mi están haciendo una Serie del Caribe que puede quedar plasmada para el recuerdo como una de las grandes y mejores actuaciones que se hayan visto en los últimos años de un equipo de Venezuela. Muy honestamente yo no apostaba nada por esta nueva versión del equipo guarista que ganó la final contra los Cardenales de Lara; y no lo hacía por las bajas que al final terminó sufriendo el equipo. Cuando estas cosas pasan por lo general la química y el buen ambiente se pierden por lo que el funcionamiento nunca termina siendo el mismo. Afortunadamente estuve equivocado y los dirigidos por Ozzie Guillén han jugado una muy buena pelota en Miami.

Y es tan así que hace dos días el pitcher zurdo Ángel Padrón se atrevió, tuvo la osadía y el carácter de lanzar un No Hit - No Run por segunda vez en la historia del torneo. La hazaña fue ante Nicaragua con un marcador de 9-0. Y fue tan sorprendente esto que Padrón cuando lanzó en la temporada regular acá en Venezuela fue un pitcher que no tuvo muy buenos números; creo que esto fue muy inesperado, absolutamente nadie se esperaba el rendimiento del andino sobre la lomita y al final terminó haciendo el que creería ha sido el juego de su vida y su carrera. He seguido poco esta Serie del Caribe, históricamente no lo hago así vaya mi equipo a representar, pero lo poco que he podido observar me ha dejado gratamente sorprendido y es que los refuerzos se han acoplado de maravillas.
And so much so that two days ago left-handed pitcher Angel Padron dared, had the audacity and character to pitch a No Hit - No Run for the second time in the history of the tournament. Una final que será ante los actuales campeones pero que ya les ganamos en la primera jornada del torneo por 3-1. Sabemos lo que es superar a Dominicana y lo más importante, tenemos con qué hacerlo. De 7 partidos disputados hemos perdido uno solo contra Puerto Rico, por otro lado Dominicana ha perdido 3 partidos y aún así están en la final. Esto es por cosas del formato que son totalmente inexplicables.
Alexi Amarista, Wilfredo Tovar, Hernán Perez, Wilson Ramos, all of them are reinforcements and the way they have shown why they were chosen on the field has been crazy, the collective performance has been one of the great spark plugs for this team to be able to reach the final. A final that will be against the current champions but we already beat them in the first day of the tournament by 3-1. We know what it is like to beat the Dominican Republic and more importantly, we have what it takes to do it. Out of 7 matches played we have lost only one against Puerto Rico, on the other hand the Dominican Republic has lost 3 matches and still they are in the final. This is because of things of the format that are totally inexplicable.

Ya en nuestro país tenemos otro panorama pero igual de esperanzador, una selección que lo está dando todo por buscar obtener su pasaje a París para las olimpiadas. La Vinotinto ha hecho un torneo espectacular, la fase de grupos la culminó invicta llegándole a ganar a Brasil 3-1. Lo más importante de todo es la funcionalidad que ha demostrado este equipo, un orden en todas sus líneas que le ha permitido llegar al cuadrangular final teniendo opciones reales de clasificar a los juegos olímpicos. El primero de los tres juegos fue contra Argentina logrando sacar un valioso empate en un partido que fue demás polémico ya que todo terminó con un penalti que para muchos no lo fue pero para otros fue bastante claro.

Jugadores como Telasco Segovia, Bryant Ortega, Jovanny Bolivar, Kelsy, Matías Lacava, etc, han sido los baluartes de este proyecto que de verdad le han dado muchas alegrías al país. El día de ayer jugaron de nuevo con Brasil en un partido que fue muy parejo y equilibrado en el medio campo, tanto así que en la primera parte apenas se hicieron daño por la gran disputa que se vio en el eje central. Un partido muy físico que perfectamente pudo haberse decantado para cualquiera de las dos selecciones. Por ejemplo, el juego de Segovia fue un espectáculo, al estar suspendido Ortega, este tuvo que jugar un poco más retrasado y las recuperaciones que logró en esa mitad de cancha fueron vitales.

En la segunda parte todo siguió bastante igual, un partido muy cortado, con muchas faltas, muchos roces, que al final hacían pensar que el empate iba a ser un buen negocio. El gol de Brasil vino por un desbarajuste en defensa, como pocos se habían visto en el torneo. El tanto de los nuestros gracias a una buena combinación en el área para que Jovvany Bolívar rematara con la zurda un gran gol. Pudimos irnos arriba por una gran pegada de Lacava pero el gran gol fue anulado por fuera de juego, bien anulado por cierto. Al final una contra mortal nos aniquiló y terminamos perdiendo.
In the second half everything remained pretty much the same, a very tight game, with many fouls, many frictions, which in the end made us think that a draw was going to be a good deal. Brazil's goal came from a defensive blunder, as few had seen in the tournament. Our goal came from a good combination in the area for Jovvany Bolivar to score a great left-footed goal. We could have gone up by a great hit by Lacava but the great goal was disallowed for offside, well disallowed by the way. In the end a deadly counter attack annihilated us and we ended up losing.
¿Que nos toca ahora? - pues nos toca ganar el domingo si o si a Paraguay, una de las mejores selecciones de este preolímpico. Ganando clasificamos así que no hay marcha atrás. Sea cual sea el resultado a estos jóvenes no hay que criticarles absolutamente nada, el trabajo que han hecho ha sido ejemplar, nunca bajan los brazos, hasta el último minuto presionan y corren, tienen una mentalidad y actitud ganadora que pesa quilates. Veremos cuál será el futuro a corto plazo el domingo porque a mediano y largo es uno muy bueno y prometedor.
What's next for us? - Well, we have to win on Sunday against Paraguay, one of the best teams in this pre-Olympic. If we win, we qualify, so there is no turning back. Whatever the result, there is absolutely nothing to criticize to these young players, the work they have done has been exemplary, they never give up, they press and run until the last minute, they have a winning mentality and attitude that weighs carats. We will see what the short term future will be on Sunday because in the medium and long term it is a very good and promising one.
