Reflecting on the Debut of WWF SmackDown

Hey there lovely people of the Hive Universe! It's your wrestling boy P, always happy to bring you content and updates on everything WWE, WOOGame, and Wrestling Worldwide.

As a dedicated professional wrestling fan, I recently went down a long memory lane and revisited the very first episode of WWF’s SmackDown.

It was like going in a time machine and watching an event that was instrumental in the history of wrestling.

In the late 1990s, there were Monday Night Wars between WCW and WWF. WCW’s Monday Nitro had regularly beaten its counterpart’s ratings, leaving WWF behind.

That is when the idea for Smackdown was initiated. Smackdown which now called Smackdown Live is another weekly show that would compete with WCW Thunder back in those days.

I found some details about how SmackDown made its debut very interesting to know.

This was a risky move on the part of WWF but it paid off eventually. The debut episode aired on April 29th, 1999 as an experiment presented in the form of one special show.

After watching this show again, I felt nostalgic.

In fact, Vince McMahon and Stephanie McMahon discussing Ministry of Darkness storyline reminded me of old rivalries and plots that defined that era known as:

    The Attitude Era.

The show indeed had a mix of hits and misses in terms of matches and segments. Some matches disappointed while others were very fascinating, like the tag team championship match between The New Age Outlaws and Ax and Smash of Demolition.

When you compare SmackDown to WCW Thunder, it’s easy to see that WWF was way ahead in terms of storytelling and character development.

Yes, WCW boasted big names like Kevin Nash and Goldberg, however, their games lacked depth and excitement that could be found in WWF.

I loved one thing about SmackDown though:

It was the priority placed on creating memorable moments. Each segment seemed like a must-see event from Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock, against the Corporate Ministry to Mankind’s captivating promo in the boiler room.

Overall, revisiting WWF SmackDown’s debut episode took me back to why I fell for wrestling initially.

Now, Smackdown is celebrating twenty-five years this year, and I would like to say that it has been a good show and I hope the future is also bright for this iconic show.

Wrestling may have changed over time, but SmackDown will always remain in my heart as something very unique.

    Thanks for reading, y'all!
